Canal this am

Didn't see much, got one keepafish but I did see the most herring I've seen in years. Thousands eastbound and tr#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g.

Looked a little smaller, do sea herring go in through there in big schools?

Also saw a couple bass in the mid 20 range cruising in front of me.

angler229 06-16-2010 01:01 PM

From what I saw over the weekend it was sea herring.

WESTPORTMAFIA 06-16-2010 01:17 PM

They were sea herring. I didn't see 1 mack today. Landed one good one that must have been 30#. I fished everything in my bag and found out that they only wanted 1 thing I had. After a couple of quick fish and multiple hits and drops in 10 minutes I landed the 30# and then casted off my $30 plug next cast. So I packed it up and called it a morning. Saw a couple other low 30#s.

Not much love for us, but livelining sea herring for schoolies proved to be surprisingly entertaining.

Of course I went loaded with mack plugs, and left the sebile MS at home...

Those Sebile plugs are no joke. The blue one with the dark back looks exactly like those sea herring in the water.

crisco 06-16-2010 01:38 PM

Live-lined them, eh?

Do they sabiki, or did you just use the ol' boot method...there was so many a few days ago! I didn't really think of doing that...

JackK 06-16-2010 02:00 PM

I bet the sabiki would have worked great. Even contemplated using a cast net, but figured I'd cut the little guys a break and not get the whole school (or a destroyed net from the riprap).

Unweighted 4/0 VMC cast out about 10', let it sink, then rip. They were in so thick I was even getting snags on a bucktail. The little bass (16-26") were a ton of fun, just had to set the hook early to make sure they didn't inhale it.

Kinda wished I had my squidding gear... That would have made for a great fight.

WESTPORTMAFIA 06-16-2010 02:04 PM

Yeah I was loaded up everything mack and it was tough until I finally switched up. I was thinking that those herring probably didn't have time or the want to hit a sabiki rig as they were swimming for their lives.

WESTPORTMAFIA 06-16-2010 02:06 PM

I usually carry a dip net around with me on the back of the bike. Got some better fish on the macks the other day but nothing huge.

crisco 06-16-2010 03:02 PM

Dip net! Perfect. they were in thick enough for that...

PS...i was loaded mack too...but managed to find some blind fish...

They were in thick like the herring. But I haven't seen one since the other morning.

ProfessorM 06-16-2010 04:06 PM

a few macks this morning, but sea herring galore. Thanks to the Celtics for tanking it and allowing me to get some much needed beauty sleep last nite. Work tonight is going to suck. Will try again tomorrow morn, will be 6 out of last 7 morns and probably my last for a while, I'm plumb worn out.

crisco 06-16-2010 07:03 PM

yup. i hear that. worn out...plus my boss won't let me slip up any.
maybe later this week...or dare i say it, the weekend (noooo...).

if there's still bait around.

clambelly 06-16-2010 07:54 PM

sea herring again. most i've seen since October 2005, but those were adults. so much bait i thought the east turn would have been epic. turned out to be a dud for the first 2 hours of the tide. one lonely break brought us back to the rocks only to find the fish swimming by, just waiting to be caught.....:grins:

So I'm not there today, I feel that I am missing something

sometimes I hate this addiction :smash: :wall:

crisco 06-17-2010 07:17 AM

I feel that way everyday...when I can't get out there and give it a try!

I feel ya... I couldn't get out in the early am so I stopped by before work. Fished from 10:30 or so until 12. It was hot for about 45 minutes but all small fish and no bait.
