424.1 MB of 1.0 GB used; 599.9 MB available

At what point do you add memory...the level of used memory is creeping up a bit at a time. Is there a minimum level of free memory you need? What uses this memory? This is a windows server also.

That's actually pretty good for not having a lot of memory. Windows 2000? What's it running?

How fragmented is hard drive?

The Dad Fisherman 07-06-2010 08:57 AM

Your fine as long as you don't start paging (using the Hard Drive as Memory). I would throw another Gig in there just for S&G but you don't need to.

Also if you are running IE on your server make sure you don't leave any windows open....IE has a notorious Memory leak where it just keeps taking memory a little at a time.

john that's my server on liquidweb. Want to make sure I'm not running into an issue here. It's the latest windows server whichever that is. 2008?

I got to pay extra for more memory but looking for the cutoff point where I NEED more memory to run the stuff or can I get by til there's like 20 gig left and it's not something I have to worry about?

1 gig of RAM for Win2k8 is running rather lean....I would definitely throw in another gig

Your stuff will run even if you run out of RAM....it will just run slowly.

And I'm assuming you meant 20 meg not 20 gig

just watch it....if performance starts to degrade check and see if you are out of ram...if so throw another gig in.

OK, to clarify some stuff here. It is a W2K8 web edition server running in a virtual machine so 1GB isn't the end of the world.

Scott, monitor the memory now and see how it is after a reboot. Does the free memory pick up where it left off or is it in fact cleaner?

If you have a question that specifically, ask Liquidweb. Like I said in the past, you need to get away from Windows Web servers ;)
