QUESTION ON BOTTOM PAINT
HELLO EVERYONE BRAND NEW TO SITE,THANKYOU FOR HAVING ME. I HAVE A 20FT CC ANGLER BOUGHT 2 SEASONS AGO. GUY BEFORE ME HAD IT MOORED. I CHOOSE TO TRAILER THE BOAT. BOTTOM PAINT IS ALL WARN. DO I GO BACK WITH SAME PAINT OR GO WITH A HARDER PAINT THAT DOESNT COME OFF?
|
Theres no need for bottom paint if you continue to trailer the boat.
|
BUT THE PAINT ON THERE NOW LOOKS LIKE #$%$*
|
While I agree that no bottom paint is best if you trailer...I like this posted question...Bottom paints have advanced over the recent years and the cost varies wildly..some costing 100's per qrt and that claim they last for years...even when taken out of the water.
Considering most peopel on this board have smaller boats (< 40') cost for the bottom paint is not a major issue.. How do you like some of the more exotic ones? What paints have you guys had experience with and which ones do you really like? |
Has anyone successfully removed all old paint from a hull? If you could do this you'd have a more economical boat, probably a little more speed as well.
|
Depending on the thinkness and how long its been on...it could be a really nasty job! (and damn hazardous too) If it is really bad, have the yard sandblast it off, the money is well spent.
Re: speed, you will gain a little at the top end with no paint HOWEVER, if you leave it in the water for a couple weeks you will loose it all and more. If you leave in it...you gotta have paint. The guys in the yard claim the more $/qrt the better. They are probably right but I like to hear about others experiences. |
IF I LET ALL OF THE EXISTING PAINT TO COME OFF, DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE AN EXPOSED HULL, BECAUSE OF PRIOR SANDING TO THE HULL WHEN THE INITIAL PAINT WAS APPLIED.
|
You should be OK - the hull may only have been scuffed before the paint was applied. One thing to consider though, if the paint eventually starts peeling a lot, you may have additional drag undereath taking of a couple knots at WOT
|
:) Thanks for the advice guys, can't wait to get out on the water.

There is a lot to know about anti foul paints of which I choose to purge from my RAM because West Marine online & cataloge explain it very well. Go check'm out. I have found their site to be helpful IRT paints. I have no affiliation with them.
Fair winds... Chris |
your right, west marine web site does have some good info...
between this: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...ing_paints.htm and http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...204&storeNum=4 you can get a antifouling 101 course thanks |
