congrats! oh yeah you are on the darkside now!

FishermanTim 08-03-2010 10:08 AM

Definitely keep the blues out, even if they "voluntarily" jump in with you. (Trust me, you don't want these aquatic buzzsaws anywhere near the family jewels, which is where they usually land when the come into the kayak!)

You will absolutely love the access and being able to get close to fish.

You will also LOVE your first "Nantucket Sleigh ride"
Mine was with a 7-10 lb. blue but the bass give you a good ride as well.

ENJOY!!!

Get that stuff out of the well in the back. That's what I usually throw my fish in, and then bunji them in. Even a blue. I think you would have a tough time grabbing rods if they were in those launchers in the rear anyway. That's a pretty good stretch from where you are sitting, and that yak gets a bit tippy when you make that kind of movement. I love mine though, most fun I've had fishing yet! You'll be happy.

FishermanTim 08-11-2010 01:06 PM

I think the rod holder/crate needs to be turned around.
As it is currently loaded, you would have to get out of the kayak to reach any rod in those rod holders.
I have 3 rod holders on my kayak, one in front of me and two behind the seat. The ones behind me are for storag ONLY. If I were foolish enough to try trolling with them there, I would be coming back with NO rods. Sure, you can troll in a kayak, but you need a rod holder that you can get to quickly and easily, and one that is sturdy enough for whatever the ocean throws your way. Remember that most rod holders are attached to the plastic with 4 screws and some silicone.
I would presume that a rod holder could literally be ripped out by a real monster fish if you aren't careful and alert.
I've had short stripers get my rod "dancing" in the rod holder. Thankfully I had adjusted the drag on the reel before I began trolling.

Anyway, whatever you do, just get out and fish!
