Why does it feel like a bender?

When you've fished all night followed by 2 hours of sleep? Even though its been a week since an adult beverage?

Feels like a class 2 hangover.

GattaFish 08-11-2010 09:27 AM

Fatigue with a possible touch of dehydration..... Been there,,,,

RIROCKHOUND 08-11-2010 09:29 AM

Yup.

I call it an offshore hangover. happens on overnight trips to the edge, I'm wrecked the next day. Gatorade and Tylenol the night we get back seems to help a lot, so I agree it's mainly fatigue and dehydration

WESTPORTMAFIA 08-11-2010 09:29 AM

Sleep is overated. I didn't sleep at all Monday night until last night. A few beers and a scotch and I was NANIGHTS for 5 hours and more fishing. Monday/Tues was good but this am sucked.

denis 08-11-2010 09:30 AM

AGE John,it's creeping up on you.

Back Beach 08-11-2010 09:30 AM

You're an old bastard, no doubt.

Brian L 08-11-2010 09:33 AM

Ahh, you too eh, John?

I was suffering from a class 3 when I saw you last. (2 sleep deprived nights and a mini-bender)

I find that regardless of whether it's an all night fishing mission or a party night, it takes about 2 days to recover from those now. When I was younger and able-er, I could do that all week :)

UserRemoved1 08-11-2010 09:33 AM

I knew a Linda Bender once. Whenever she answered the radio she always said "This is Linda Bender Over"

:hee:

lame

JohnR 08-11-2010 09:34 AM

Maybe it's the time zone difference. I'm assuming you're fishing in England if you call it a litre. Here in the US, we call it a liter.

quart! US never really made the transition to metric.

bassballer 08-11-2010 10:07 AM

im experiencing it this morning.

FishermanTim 08-11-2010 10:11 AM

It's a melatonin type hangover. Your body produces it to help you get to sleep, but if you are pulling an all-nighter, your body doesn't stop porducing it, it produces MORE.
The more you deprive yourself of sleep, the worse the effect will be, until to either collapse in a heap from exhaustion, or you die.
Remember that you NEED sleep. Sure, catnaps help in some situations, but you NEED serious REM sleep or risk suffering a serious psycho-meltdown. Hallucinations, paranoia and system failures are some of the results of lack of sleep. (Of course I'm talking more than a couple days worth, but you get the picture.)

The only way I have figuered out to avoid that feeling is to "fish smarter". All night marathons are harder as you get older. I finally asked myself "what's the point?" Then I began to fish smarter rather than longer. Made me feel better, more family time, everyone is happy.

Ugh, this whole last week I've been doing that. It caught up with me biig time yesterday. Been lazy with work, had to get stuff done. I could barely think straight, losing control of fine motor skills! Slept from 5:00pm to 8:30am!!! and still could sleep more!!! I'm fairly young and it catches up after a week. When I start to a light sore throat I know I'm really over doing it.

That said, feel great today :musc: and will be back at it!!!

This is dead on. Only problem I have is that I moved to a new area, have no one to show me the spots or windows. So putting in the allnighters will help cut the learning curve. Hit spots multiple times a night at different stages of the tide. Obviously I'm taking a toll physically!

Fishoholic 08-11-2010 11:13 AM

Suck it up. It will be January before you know it. You can sleep then :)

I've been doing that for the last 5-6 years myself. Stay home on nights that ya know are gonna stink, bad weather, wrong moon, etc. Hit it hard on those choice nights, nights that ya know the odds are in your favor. No sense in getting burnt out in early August.

Delerious. My keyboard is the size of car hood. a long way from key to key.

But no one makes us do this. We choose to do it to ourselves.

I'm in the same situation... i should start recording myself on the phone conversations i have. I can barely stay with it. The best thing is that the august trophy moon is in its prime!!!

Rockfish9 08-11-2010 02:24 PM

Kind of gets to be the norm by this time of year..... I never give it much thought....

tysdad115 08-11-2010 02:46 PM

I can sympathize, two days so far up and out at 2am, fish til 7,shower work till 6. I'm tired, but the voices in my head tell me to man up because I will be at the ditch again tomorrow am too. Friday is looking like another one so I guess I will be among the walking zombies.

ProfessorM 08-11-2010 06:36 PM

LOL I'll be going for my third all niter,in a row, plus work thrown in ,works the killer. 3 hours sleep for 3 days straight, but the fish are there so its worth it. Gettin old stinks.

SurfCaster413 08-11-2010 06:40 PM

Geesh old age is the general consense's here, so do they allow rascal scooters on canal bike path or can you get ORV stickers for them? How much air do you gotta let out of the tires?

I don't know how you do it Paul

I think i need to lose some weight, maybe that will help

Saltheart 08-11-2010 09:02 PM

Its because of where the two hours puts you in your sleep cycle. You are probably waking up right in the middle of your deepest part of sleep. Try experimenting with 1.5 hours , 2.5 hours , 3 hours , 2 hours. ect. Find out where in your rythm you are at assorted times after conking out. Then add or subtract fishing time so that you are in a light part of the sleep cycle when its time to answere the alarm to go to work.

1 litre sounds like a lot but the wind , etc is evaporating water like crazy. The wdsers or wetsuit also drain you then soak it up like a sponge.
