Trailer ready for hurricane season haul outs ?
I'm scheduled to be out of town this weekend for a family wedding.... Watching Earl carefully. Need to install second leaf spring, and order another set to get on. I figure I will make the call to haul or not on Thursday. What are your plans and state of the trailer?
|
I've only had to pull the boat once in 25 years for a hurricane. Turns out i was working in Lyndonville, VT at the time and had to get a couple of friends to pull it for me. But, my trailer is typically buried behind a couple cords of wood this time of year. I made it a point of completing the wood stacking earlier than normal and can get to the trailer. I wonder if it's still registered....?
|
My trailer is ready but I will be on the West Coast on business Thursday and Friday. I pulled last year or the year before because of a storm that never came.
Not pulling this year. I'll let the little girl ride it out. I am in a new marina this year way back in Warwick Cove. Very sheltered. Taking my chances this year. |
Two trailers in the yard, both accessible. Both need new rollers! I'll wait and see; I'll pull the boat if Earl is predicted to visit upon the Watch Hill area.
|
I go through the trailer each season after I dump the boat in, as long as the tires have air ( new in 08) she's ready... last storm I pulled the boat for was Gloria... she rode out Bob... just fasten and extra line to the starboard cleat and one across the transome and let her ride.. unless the marina says otherwise...
|
I will be watching and making my call Wednesday night. If it looks just close I will batten down and add extra lines and chafe protection. But it looks like we'll get a direct hit I will pull.

Whats a trailer ???
 |
mine on the trailer in the shed

It's not always the best idea to pull...put it in your driveway and many times a tree will hit you and cause more damage than if you left her in. (This happened to my cousin in NC...he was Hugo'ed big time and his boat was basically broken in two) Also it is common in florida to see boats that were pulled and blocked actually blown over. Now yards are tieing them to the pavement like airplanes.
I may move to a big town mooring and toss a chain from the morring ball to the boat as a backup if the line chafes thru. The only thing you have to worry about are other boats breaking free. (My guy kicks me off the dock in a storm...it is the one thing I hate about my slip) Protected coves with a killer mooring is the best but if you have a solid boat shed...now your livin. This looks like it could get nasty and screw up the fishing for a couple weeks. Best of luck to you all |

Looking like you would not want to be on the canyons Friday night |
A few years ago I made the decision NOT to pull the boat. The storm came, knocked a tree over in my yard, crushed the garage and landed on the empty trailer........Needless to say, I am a little shy about pulling it!!!!!
|
going to pull tomorrow night. it's easy enough to do and I can put it in my storage yard at work where it will be pretty safe from trees etc.
|
Mine is safe on the trailer.......
.......at the mechanics! Having broken motor mount repaired. If it finished by Friday I may leave it there until after the storm. He has very few trees and I live in the woods. |
On the trailer in the yard, but I due worry about the trees, cleared some last year so it's better.
|
I just got into work - the boat is on the trailer in the yard as close to the house as I could get it. Hopefully, the house will break the fall of any trees that might come down!
|
My boat is still on its slip in Hingham. Starting to 2nd guess leaving it in...
|
Mines always on a trailer so I'm leaving it on the cape at work, they have smaller trees than my yard, it should be safe, I hope:eek:
|
I am staying in, but I am making the trip down tonight to double the lines, put all loose stuff below, take down antennas, riggers, also I have a full enclosure so I think I will take that down and stow it in the cabin.
Just too many unknowns at this point, may as well put some effort in and do what I can. |
on the trailer in the yard away from as many trees as possible. needed to do a little maintenance anyhow so I'm getting it done over thenext couple of days hopefully.
|
I hope the giant maples in my yard come down on her and crush her. It will kill 2 birds with one stone..:biglaugh:

I just left there a couple hours ago, place is still full of boats, I hope they tie extra lines on like I just did for my brother who just bought a boat a week ago and went to Florida for the weekend. I asked him where the trailer was, but it's in storage, so I just tied extra lines on, hopefully it stays put and no others crash into it. |
Mine is in the front yard. Brother helped me bringing the trailer to the ramp, and I powered it ALL the way on. We have been doing this for each other for years. Minute and a half, tops. I see cars stopped at tolls getting change longer than ours is on the ramp. But it was a zoo down there at high tide.
Earlier, I helped #^^^^& get his boat out. He called as I was bringing my boat around to report both bearings had blown out. When I went to see where he left it on the side of the road, it looked like he had gone through bearings, racers and probably the spindles.... He's screwed. I know what he'll be working on tomorrow AM. Thankfully I have been doing maintenance and rebuilding mine over the past couple years. |
I pulled mine as well........solo, less than 1 hour from mooring to driveway.

Worst case a dock cleat rips free, then I have a problem. |
Staying in, trailering is not an option.
|
I am staying on board tonight. I have to be down there before 2:00 because there is a mandatory shut down of all business's and no driving after that time. Wind speed are supposed to gust to 75 but it looks like it is breaking up now...still a 75 mph wind gust can cause some problems. I would rather stay on the boat than the house anyway.
We just had a rain squall move thru but it only lasted about 15 min. I will have my cell phone and try sign on if I can. If I had my "cockpit cam" running I could give you my animated impression of Jim Cantore....(BTW I think he deserves an Oscar nomination for best dramatic actor. ) |
good luck and be safe Jim

Saw a number of trailer boats heading west last night on the Pike!
|
Who needs a trailer when I can just get Sligah to haul it out for me!
