circumcision

hell, we've talked about everything else out here......

So, lots of new dads, what are you guys doing for your newborn boys? My son (now 6) had a few things going on when he was born and we pushed off having it done. I had no reason at all for doing it , just that I thought it was the right thing to do. I started researching and could find ZERO reason for doing it. Lots of old science and traditions. More and more socieites are moving away from it. Doctors can care less and dont see a need for it. I never bothered to have it done. So the ineveitable came up - he goes swimming with his buds and he comes home and talks to me about how he looks different. I told him why and he seemed to understand. What are other doing? I got snipped as a baby, but I other than looking different, I cant see why anyone would have it done?

I had it done as a baby because they said my unit was too big to fit in regular diapers. Even with some of it removed, my pants still fit tight in that area now. We had it done to my son and I didn't even ask. I guess because my wife's Jewish, I didn't have a choice. If there's no compelling medical reason to do it, I'd say don't bother. At his age now, I would think it might be painful.

RIJIMMY 08-30-2010 01:56 PM

yeah, you got the whole "covenant" thing going. Blame Abraham.

true - I read that historically, one of the main reasons for it was to curb masturbation. Yeah,,,,,,that works,,,,,,,

What if he's out hiking the White Mountains for a week, and his hygiene slips and meets some hottie and out pops a cheese stix?

So I have 2 boys one 22 and one 16. Neither is snipped, though my opinion was that they should'nt have anything dad does'nt. Did'nt work. The older one has never mentioned it, but a few weeks ago the younger one asked if he could be. Not sure if he knows how painful it will be and where he will fit it in beween football, wrestling and lacrosse. I keep forgetting to ask him why, maybe some experienced 16 yr old girl said OOH what's that?

From what I've been told by the misses who's in the medical field, there can be a hygiene issue with higher risk of things like yeast infections and UTIs. Also, studies I've seen show a higher risk to STDs.

Got curious to do a little looking and found this:

Personally, I'm snipped. Keeping your junk clean and fresh is enough of a pain already, can't imaging having to deal with that as well.

I guess Im missing something.....what is it thats a pain? showering? I've never spent a minute thinking about it.

Slipknot 08-30-2010 03:44 PM

Did you hear the Cedric Maxwell story on weei that day :rotf2: about his mom telling him he's getting his tonsils out?
don't do that to your kid, I'm sure you would tell him the truth anyway.

it's painful at any age, just that if you are older than a toddler, you remember it.

Bronko 08-30-2010 03:46 PM

Yea, tough issue, I had my boys done because I am. I will say I saw teasing in the showers aimed at those who weren't circumsized. Not brutal...but the old anteater/covered wagon/longsleeve jokes. There are legit health issues as JohnnyD said if they go uncut, but good hygene can cure those.

Long story short.. parents choice.

I think the health things are historic old wives tales. I've really dont a ton of research. There isnt really too much backing it up. Our doctors told us, as you said its just choice. Im not thinking of getting it done now, just have to start talking to him about it and getting him used to it. I had a good friend in college who wasnt cut and he used to score more girls than anyone I ever met. We used to joke that it was a curiosity factor for the girls, there may have been some truth to that

Was joking.

Just make sure when he gets older, he doesn't get a brilliant idea like this guy:

Pete F son's a three-sport athlete - they're not usually the most sensitive guys in the world. That's probably the best advice for it. It's probably more a self-consciousness thing depending on the kid, the community, whether they are athletes or not, etc. Early sexual experiences - you would kind of like it to go smooth (pardon the pun). Personally, we never discussed not doing it with our son.

Nebe 08-30-2010 04:40 PM

let me share some circumcision trivia- the dude in the jewish world that does the circumcision is called the Moil. In the glass world, after you make a piece of glass and let the blow pipe cool down, the glass that was not used to make the piece and was still on the blow pipe cools down and cracks off the pipe- it is sharper than razor sharp and is called....... the moil. Hundreds if not thousands of years ago, this piece of glass was the sharpest thing found on the planet and was always used for circumcising men..

Had both my boys done. Sure, I married a Jewish girl but I'd probably have done it regardless.

I had my 2 boys Circumcised, If it was today I would have said no but 25 30 years ago it was the thing to do to fit in.

And I wish My parents said no also, worst thing that could ever happen to a man, you loose 90% of your sensitivity in the tip of your penis after Circumcision

Also snipped but your wife is right. Ever heard of schmeggies:) Its less work to keep it clean and away from mildew. Snip it and do your a kid a favor unless your last name is Flinstone.

BS!!!!!!!!! And if you can prove it's right I would want to be cut even more. I couldn't even think of being 1% more sensitive on the tip. Not even joking.......

The bastards. The 3 minutes in the bedroom, including 2.5 minutes of cuddling already takes up too much time.

It was probably a group of women who made up this sadistic tradition of cutting the hoodie off.

How could Nature be so remiss? Don't do it. The practice is tied up with religious dogma and hygenic issues from thousands of years ago. Cleanliness, of course, is paramount.

bloocrab 08-31-2010 06:36 AM

Days before my wife gave birth to our son......one of our nephews had a terrible infection under the motor in which they were forced to remove the hood. That was our turning point as we weren't sure which direction to go. The delivery doctor said "flip a coin" if you can't decide.....it's that minuscule.

american spirit 09-01-2010 01:28 PM

whatever your status is should be your kids status. you don't want him looking at your junk and thinking why his doesn't look the same. lot of doctors are not recommending it i think, not sure why.
