Good Deed Done

So i got out of work a little Early today and decided to head to Black Rock and get some last minuet fishing in. Man is that ocean angry.

As i was trying to find a spot to try out my new plugs and Penn sargus 5000 i came across a collage kid in his early 20's attempting to fish off the rocks.

We struck up a small conversation. He mentioned to me this was his first time fishing and he wanted to try out surf fishing, as we continued to conversant about fishing i noticed he was trying to fish the rough water with out a sinker and a rust old hook, as i looked further i noticed he was fishing with what looked like a 1970's Penn setup but it was hard to tell the labels were all scratched and and the thread around the eyelids were coming unraveled. ( you know the kind )

He mentioned to me he traveled to his farther house and told his dad he wanted to try his luck surf fishing, his farther took him out back and dusted off the old rod and reel and said here yea go son have at it. These kind of stories kind of hit home.

I had just took the extraneous stuff out of my back pack and left just some plugs and some essentials for my voyage. Realizing i could not assist him where he was i invited him back to my truck. He excitingly accepted my invitation. As we walked back to the parking lot we made small talk about freshwater fishing and surf fishing.

So the deed has begun~ noticing that his string was probably the original string that came with the pole i striped it down strung him up and set him up with the equipment he would need to fish squid the bait store sold him. Once i had him set up it was time to send him back to the fishing hole, he was excited and with a firm hand shake and a smile he sped off to get some more casts in.

My only hope is that he caught something even if it was a scup, and that he return the good deed one day to someone else.

Moral of the good deed, do onto other what you would want done to you. If someone does something nice for you make it a point to do something nice for someone else. If not start the chain yourself.

Nice! One time I lent a guy my knife at Black Rock.He was tossing bait in the pocket and forgot his.I give away more plugs than I lose to tangles or snags.I still have crap luck and people love to try and take advantage of me any chance they get.

Good for you, some good fishing karma coming your way

Good fishing karma and a good dead. However, I think the advice i would have given him would be to STAY THE HELL AWAY from black rock on a day like today. And give him the speech about the treacherous nature of that stretch of coast and what kind of gear he should be equipped with. Wasnt it last year that a couple got washed in there and perished during a tropical storm...

last weekend someone was lost just around the corner, he was sensable to stay high enought. I think they need to rename common sense, it doesnt seem to be that common any more. :smash:

That is bad Karma if that is the case.

Good deed, but Rob's right. That's a stretch that can be unpredictable (waves) and a couple did perish there in the last year or two. Combine w/ Hazard and you've got an area that's too risky for unprepared, inexperienced fishermen.
