That is the lathe I have. Mine is older though and has a 1/3 HP motor. It works great. I have turned maple, birch, poplar, red cedar and now alaskan yellow cedar. The only drawback That I find is the headstock center is not aggressive enough. The tool rest is on the small side too. When doing a large plug you have to move the rest back and forth to finish the lure, unless the lure is only 4" long. Can't go wrong for the price though.

I have one of those. It is ok to start off with
at the rate I see Newell Guy cranking out plugs, he will probably wear that lathe out in no time:) Good thing fishing season is coming up soon.

LOL, I turned another 25 today, out of Yellow cedar though. I don't want to use anything else now. This stuff is great.

I've been using one of those as well, for about 18 months. You can get wider toolrests elsewhere; I made my own by bolting some angle iron to the exisiting toolrest. Anyway, the machine works fine, but I should add that I now wish I'd bought a Jet or Delta midi-lathe, which are better-built machines... :) --OJ

OJ, I have used a true mini likethe one you have, if you want to do real small stuff you have the option. I have the G8690 which has about 8" more between centers and 1/3 hp TEFC. It can handle the bigger stuff but yiou can also get the small jobs done without much trouble. I agree with your point regarding the difference in construction.
