schoolie outfit
 

hey all i have a 10 foot and a 9 foot rod with penn power grphite 7000 on them. I want a smaller outfit so i can have a challenge for all the schoolies i catch, was thinking maybe a 7'6-8 foot rod and some kind of spinning reel. I want this rod for throwing smaller jigs and small pieces of chunks to drift from the surf. Any thing for catching schoolies (i.e. jigs, worms...) or any tips would be greatly appreciated. budget is about 150

Anthony I was at the show yesterday, and I saw a nice rod made by Tica that would make an excellent schoolie rod. The Sportsmans Den , which is one of the board sponsers, had them. You can also see if Mike has them over at CapeCodTaclke, another board sponser.

they also had some sweet okuma reels.

hey guys, i went to #^&#^&#^&#^&'s yesterday in md and found some good surf combo (penn), it's very light and thin. it can hold 15-30 lbs.

I have the St. Croix Ben Doerr 7'. Its rated for 3/4 oz. Excellent 1 piece schoolie rod. Coupled with the best Shimano you can afford, this will be what your looking for(except for the throwing chunks).

Stradic 2000
ROn Arra surf Pro 8 foot one Peice
Stradic 2000
Any Surf type Rod with a 1/2oz to 1oz Rating should be good for long distance casting and a good time. With a Stradic 2000

Inshore Type
St CRoix TideMaster 6'6"-8 Med-l Action
Stradic 2000 or Cardiff 301, ABu 6400, Millionare
Bass Pro inshore Extreme 6'-7'
Stradic 2000 or Cardiff 301, ABu 6400, Millionare
Any rod 6'6"-8' is great Med.L.-Med.H. Action with 3/8-1 1/2oz lure

nothing beats a stradic well except for a Sustian then comes the Stella god of the spinners.

Anthony there are alot of good suggestions here covering the whole budget spectrum.

Think lighter graphite rods and a small 4000 size reel - yes, the Stradic is a good choice but not the only choice... I have an 8' St Croix custom that I built with a Stradic 4000 and my favorite is a Loomis SU965 with a 5500C3 ABU but I just picked up a 5500 Mag Elite for it :kewl: ...

IFG - most of us would go broke on your recommendations ;) ... And I would use a 4000 over a 2000 everyday. Capacity just doesn't hurt in this case...



You DO! Remember, half your schoolie rods have guides with the inserts missing, reels that may or may not engage, and cotton linen type line - yeh, your schoolie gear can use a little help :D

I agree about the 4000. I have an older Aero 4000 spooled with 10# Big Game and its plenty for schoolies. I also use 15# Big Game as a light leader. It works for me, can't recall any break offs. Simple white bucktail w/ white curlytail works great. I like the 3/4oz chrome Rattletrap also.

Here's a good combo you can get for under $250:

St Croix Tidemaster TS 80 MF or HF, Daiwa SS 2600 Tournament reel, and 14# Fireline. A Tica Camry 4500 reel lowers the cost to around $220. No idea on how those Ticas hold up, but they will handle Power Pro or some other soft braid better than the Daiwa.

The Tidemaster is a great rod for the money--cheaper and made with better components than the Ben Doerrs.

I also saw those Tica's at the show, nice rod for the money, see them at sportsmens den in quincy.

I primarily use a 7'6" bps inshore extreme with a stradic 4000. They sell that as a combo for around $150. I really like the outfit for its light weight and sensitivity and it handled fish up to the mid 30" range and blues up to 10 lbs.

hmm, that's a lot of gears, guys.

From the surf,8 ft. medium action(not too noodle like)shimano reel(you choose which one). From the boat, 7ft. medium rod(could be a little on the noodle side), agin with shimano reel. Go medium on the action for schoolies, you want to have fun with them, not just horse them in.
