Boarded by CG
 

Went out Sat for my last trip of the year. Swells kept me out of the aread I wanted to fish for blackfish, stayed up in the bay. Wind made it a pita to anchor on some good structure. About 9am, with a few other boats around, I see a CG boat with @ 7 guys creeping closer and closer to me. It was a little awkward, I wasnt sure what I was supposed to do so I kept fishing. They got close and asked when the last time I was boarded and I told them never. They dropped off two guys on my boat. They were very cool, and explained everything to me. Took about 20 mins. I passed the inspection with no issues. They told me this was routine stuff and they'd rather be doing search and rescues, I told them I hope I never, ever, see them on a search and rescue. These guys were top notch and its good knowing we have people like that looking out for us.
Day ended with no fish, we never even had a hit. Same crabs for 4 hours!

Perhaps you should have put on a new crab?

Tuna fishing 30 miles S of Nomans 10-15 years ago, the day before a hurricane was supposed to pass, flatass calm, with Sauerkraut , on his Fortier, near a dragger, we picked up a 70ish lb bluefin. Big deal back then, it was legal and we wanted to eat it. There was a big CG ship nearby, and as we hauled that fish in they started launching a small boat. I told Sauerkraut, they are coming over here to inspect that fish, and when they get here and find out it is legal, they are going to inspect you to make it worth their trouble, and since there is no way in hell you are going to pass, we need to throw that fish back. We did. They hauled their small boat back up. We ended the day fishless.

The CG are actually great guys and any inspection should be quick&pains assuming you let them do their job without any hassle or wise a&& comments. Remind to hide the contraband before they pull up alongside if you can do so without raising additional flags.....

I've been boarded multiple times and all has gone on without a hitch. One time they actually noticed one of my flares had actually "exploded" exposing the chemicals....thank you!

They had a good laugh when they saw my flares with an expired date of 1984 at the bottom of my safety bin.

Blackfishing was dead outside Sunday as well Jim; dirty water with the big swell = no bite.

I think the CG has greatly improved their reputation. The only guys I hear bitch are the guys who consistently carry contraband on board. It's like a drug runner never liking cops, no matter what the cop is doing.

yup - I will be getting one! I was eyeing yours in the classifieds but didnt move fast enough!

I was put through the ringer by a coastie on a "routine" stop. He said he smelled alcohol on my breath. Of course he did I was holding the beer in my hand! Went through two hours worth of touch your nose touch your toes. Made me dock at the C.G. station and walk a straight line! When it as all said and done I walked away with a notice os a passed inspection.

Next time they come alongside tell them you were boarded this year and more than likely they will move along to the next boat. Honestly it's a %$%$%$%$ load of paperwork to board a boat and if another unit was just onboard the boarding officer will opt to find another vessel. That doesn't mean that DEM/MEP won't board you. I've heard of them boarding the same boat a few times in a year. They have a very boring job :smash:

he gave me a copy of the report and said that if approached in less that 6 months or so, they most likely wont bother me again. Since I wont be out on the water again for @ 6 months, it may not really matter.

Get use to it!! There going to be a bunch of DEM guys soon with all the new cash they getting from the Rec Lic next season! Your tax dollars (Fish Lic money) hard at work!

I've been boarded a few times through the years, this season I was boarded the night I put the boat in( they told me they were bored , and I was the only "fish" out that april evening )...I'm surprised i dont get boarded more often, seeing as I have to pass by the CG station on my way in and out.. and they get their fuel for the zodiak from my marina.. usualy we exchange tips of the hat's and go our sepperate ways.. I've never had an issue with them...

FYI

DEM will ck & recheck no matter what you tell them / the C/G is primarly checking for safety while DEM is checking for fishing violations & then safety ><><><

CG is a class outfit. Professional and friendly but no nonsense

My son in law and i used to drift eels in the East River not far from the UN
Building. After 9/11 they boarded us everytime we were in the river.

Between the CG, State and local police boats you were being watched
all the time from above the Tappan Zee down past Sandy Hook.

The place was wired for sound. If they had found the Clammahs bloo fish M 80's
he'd still be posting from jail. :)

This was the first year they missed me in about 6 seasons straight

over 20 years on my boat with heavy use and never boarded even once. Helps to have a boat that looks Bristol and have the outside safety gear (throwable preserver , Man overboard pennent, on display and in good shape, everything tied down and stowed , etc). Also some luck involved. Boat was never in the water without all required safety gear and then some.

never been in the 40 odd years being on the water..came close only once...saw them coming broadside to me about 50' away...walk to the rail..unzipped my fly an a took piss..they did an about face an went to another boat.

The reason I ask is a buddy of mine was on a charter off Block Island with a very well known captain. One of the party took a leak of the side of the boat and the CG came swarming down on him, did a full inspection of the boat (kind of sucks if your on a charter) and then fined the captain.

Fined him for what?

If you are outside the 3mi limit it is legal to flush your head overboard. I can't imagine there is a fine for peeing. I pee all the time overboard, my head is still winterized from last winter. Besides, You should see the dump a 500# seal makes and he is right near the shore.

100% true, happened in 2009.

Probably not an issue with the "waste" as it is an issue with taking his junk out to pee. It's the prudish American way.
