computer problem ? big anoyance

is this a virus ploy? what gives? heard about this /seen this?

i leave my PC on ..........while i'm taking a shower

.........i come back and the mouse and keyboard (drivers?)
no longer work until i reboot....

control- alt- delete ......... wouldn't do a thing

I think i have plenty of memory :point: in this box
a gigabyte stick is in there..

keyboard is fairly new , the mouse recently replaced too

 hard drive is rather full only a 40 gig
to the point that 15 percent isn't available (unused)
to run the defrag program which may be the culprit.

Turn up the henweigh

JohnR 11-29-2010 05:21 PM

Hard to say if it was locked up / frozen. Or KB / Mouse worked after reboot. If this is a one time thing, no biggie, if frequent then chase down.

Clean up your system to get as much reasonable free space as you can. Defrag your disks once a month whether you need to or not ;)

Raven 11-29-2010 05:43 PM

i tried deleting crap but couldn't seem to part with ten percent
of my hard drive in the process, needing 15% free to defrag so it says

so i gotta up grade the drive... to BIGGAH

download windirstat and let it do an image of your hard drive usage. Bet you have plenty of temp files, and uneeded images / video. Just be sure to google what you can delete in windows before you do it.

Also do diskcheck and disk cleanup

An external usb 2.0 1 TB hard drive is 119 bucks. I have a bunch of 500 gigs I go for like 79.

JohnR 11-29-2010 09:26 PM

Run the windirstat and tell me what file names are taking the most space.

Also, what model HDD do you have?

striperman36 11-29-2010 09:29 PM

its the big ones john

bloocrab 11-29-2010 11:04 PM

Are you using a wireless mouse/keyboard?

Change the batteries......or stop taking showers.

Raven - do not delete the CSC sub folder. Not that you are likely running shared offline file synch from a server you do not have ;)

vineyardblues 11-30-2010 03:03 PM

delete the Veggie Porn

Back about early to mid 90's I had a big SCSI system with a total of 1 T HD space (which was huge then) . I did a lot of downloading siftware from a news server using a robot. SCSI drives were expensive then.

Now I have about 1 T total with half as an expernal drive. I put all the pics , movies etc external and just use the internal drives for day to day. I also unplug one drive as a Master backup that I can just clone over when I get into deep crap.

Anyway , I bet all my files only total about 100G now and if you take out the full length motion pictures I bet its less than 30 G. I have to laugh at myself now having easy Terabyte capability now and having almost no use compared to 15 years ago when I paid a fortune to have that same space and used up every bit of it. Funny how things go. I think one big contributor was when @home network went belly up and cox had to use their own servers. Download rates from news servers was cut by more than a factor of 10. What I could do in an hour or 2 now takes all day and night. I always figured those things would improve over time but in fact that aspect has gone the other way.

BTW , SBNews is a great robot for downloading off the news servers. Very easy to use , very low price and I think 30 day free trial to test it. You can mask files , load handreds of user groups for download at one time , you can run about 5 downloads at once limited by your ISP not the program. You can dupe check , etc , etc.

Sorry for the tangent but I freaked when I read Raven had just 40 Gig. :)

I don't delete it either, I just deleted the entire windows directory. Is that bad?

Raven 12-01-2010 07:34 AM

The system I use now , a Pentium 4 3.2GHz copper core prescott whatsadinky cost me $299 refurbed from dell outlet maybe 6 years ago. They have made that dell outlet much harder to use by changing the search windows. that's really unfortunate. You used to be able to zero in on just what you wanted or keep refreshing until what you wanted appeared in the outlet. I still think Dell outlet is a good place to buy , just harder to do it now IMO.

I hope you get your system up and running the way you want it Raven. The computer is an everyday tool for me now. When its on the blink I get really irritated.

Raven 12-02-2010 06:39 AM

seems to be running ok now

it sucks when ya loose operating systems disks too
(they were melted) because then yer screwed when
asked to insert disk.... for the whatever file

noted : VB & thanks

thanks all ! for the assistance
