yamaha 150 4 stroke
i,m replacing my 150 evenrude this spring,its the last time . im looking at a new yamaha 150x4.. please what are the pro,s n con,s from you guys who have one..new ob arn't cheap. it kills me to pay so much for imo so little .lots of over head ........ thanks......dave obtw for sale one 150 evenrude .under 600hrs make me a offer....

I have an evinrude 150 and all I can tell you about the Yamaha is that its practially silent. I've been alongside boats that are idling and you cannot even tell its on. I think you should buy 2 and give one to me. It is Christmas and I've been good this year!

Had the same situation with Suzuki. Real quiet, had no idea my buddy's boat was running. Under rated motor.

I have the 150hp Suzuki, real quite and came with a 6yr warranty! Really handy when I blew the powerhead a year ago.

They are whisper quiet at idle, but wot 2strokes and 4 strokes are both loud. The only negatives I've heard on Yamaha's is you HAVE to keep up with their maintenance schedule, and be sure to let the motor warm up before dropping the hammer. A friend of mine went to an outboard class, the teaching mechanic said said the EPO boats went from Yammi to ETEC because of the cold start problem.
If your rude was was a 2stroke, you'll see a big difference on coming to plane, but after that, you'll just save money at the same speed. Good Luck |
My buddy's boat has 2 of them, they have been great.
Quiet, dependable, a world of difference from the 2 strokes. He has about 600 hrs now, no problems. We do the maint and it's not bad at all. Personally, I'd look at Suzuki though, I hear they are significantly cheaper and they have a good rep too. |
I have the 150 4 stroke on my 21' center console and it pushes it well. I'n not going to win any speed records but it gets me where I need to go. I'm not sure what size or type of boat you have, but you may need to consider size. Mine does about 28mph at 4500 rpms. I can get it up to 42mph at wot. The pros are that it does run very very quiet (I started it a couple times while already running), and it just sips gas. I'd say it burns 5gph at most on average. My buddy has one on his 20' cc and he thinks he burns about 2.5gph (I think hes full of it). I only had the boat for this year and so far no cons so I can't help you there. Maintanence was easy, I did it myself. Don't forget you will also save a lot of green on Outboard Oil since its a 4 stroke, and also with that comes no smoke or oil burning smell. I did a lot of research before I bought and this engine got very high marks along with the Suzuki. Good luck.

thanks guys for the input. i,m done with the rudes they sucked 4 me ,always something...i like the zukies my first pick, but i may have a friend for the yamaha price ??? no matter its 10 or 11gran plus .i should give up the big boat and buy a 18fter but it would kill me to sell my 21ft desperate one.it rigged just the way i like it...

I'll put a vote in for the Suzuki as well. My 150 has been perfect over 3 seasons so far, and the 6 year warranty is fantastic. Very quiet, efficient, and reliable.
The 100 hour service is an oil change. Every 200 you do impeller and filter. (I think that is it, I'm due for an impeller this spring, which I hope to attempt myself). |
I would take the Zuke hands down. those motors have some bottom end that is incredible. I have a customer with a 140 on a 21' Kencraft walkaround. very deep v hull. I was amazed at how well the boat went with that motor. Buzzy's boat moves too. I think they are made a little better than the Yamaha. I have seen both completely apart and the internals are definitey better imo.

A few things to consider.
As Yamaha 4strokes go the 4cyl 150 has been one of their best engines they put out. A few cons though. Yamaha 4 strokes really don't like water in the fuel ! (something to really consider with e15 coming) Yamaha 4 strokes require 89 oct gas, minimum ! Yamaha 4 strokes warranties are less than Suzuki. Yamaha 4 strokes cost more $ than Suzuki. I would seriously take a long look at Suzuki ! Etecs are awesome also. Just as quiet, fuel efficient, very cheap to run & maintain, lighter and quicker out of the hole. But for the amount of $ all motors cost today I would want to get the longest life out of them and I doubt any 2 stroke including Etec will last as long as a 4 stroke with real internal lubrication inside the motor. |
thanks r/ron .....i need that type of info...this motor is the last one, i hope . my 21 cc full w/ gas n gear weights about 3000 lbs loaded ,i have always ran a 150 6cyl 2stroke....i think i need the same size motor w/ a 4 stroke ...yes ???

One problem with putting a 4 stroke on a boat designed for a 2 stroke is the weight. I don't know what your boat is rated for, but many people I know that have done that change and some experts I know all agree that it will bog down quite bad in the transom when you slow down. They don't have the torque of 2 strokers, so don't perform like you would think on a boat designed for lighter power.
That said, I repowered with Etec this season and at idle it is just a quiet as a 4 stroke, the engine is amazing. Sweet for trolling, (which I do lots of) And yes they ALL make noise running hard. 2 stroke scream, 4 strokes rumble. ???? Good luck with whatever you do. |
I have a yami 150, 3 yrs, haven't had a problem. Runs fine on 87 octane.
Got a 6 year warranty. If you wait till around the boat shows to buy, they usually extend the warranty from 3 to 6 year. |

I think Yamaha and Honda make the best, most reliable outboards. I own a Yamaha and a Honda but not in the 150 hp size.
Look at any marina and the number of Yamahas dwarf all other manufacturers combined. OYu'll enjoy a new Yammie for sure and the boat show season will bring nice re-power incentives, too. |
one more thing .what is your fuel use per hr with your 150 - 4 strokes

sell the boat and motor and buy a diesel.:) E15 is going to kill a lot of outboards, the marine industry is not prepared for this and they are in panic mode.
Just kidding..but E15 will cause problems. I think any of the OB's out there today are pretty decent. Just make sure you keep your high quality fuel filter really clean (change often) and use whatever product is recommened by the company in the fuel. (I had a Yamaha 4stroke and used their "ring-free", and I can tell you it makes a hell of a difference!!, I would not have belived it but that stuff is magic) |
you have to look at the Labor "value"
even though it's a labor of "love" of "you" switching everything over from the 21 footer to a smaller boat.... 18 footer and then add that "value" to the price of the 150 hp Suzuki or what ever you end up buying.... and see if that would pay for the 225 like what George says |
my friend and i both have suzuki 140's. he got his 4 yrs before mine. i think this is the 6th season w mine. no problems for either of us. i put an insane ammount of hours on my engine. easy to change the impeller and oil. wicked quiet. that motor is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Put a 250 on it wouldn't it be nice come in at 60 mph when the water is flat

Put a new Etec 115 on my 20 Seacraft Seafari last season. Not a light boat...still does 30+ knots; "very" efficient in the fuel dept.; trolls nicely, clean & quiet. Weight is not a lot less than 4 strokes but if you have a low transom like the old SC's every lb. counts. Winterize w/ the turn of a key!
