Luv their early stuff, once real popular I lost interest . Was lucky enough to live a few towns over as a youngin so before they hit the big time they played a couple Friday nite dances, remember those?, when I was in high school, little did we know.

Aerosmith has something very much in common with the Beatles.
A drummer who sucks but was in the right place in the right time !

every time Aerosmith is mentioned you say the drummer sucks...:rotf2: I'll admit he's no virtuoso...but he hardly sucks. Never mind the fact it is his band and he made up the name even.... I'd say he fits perfectly with the level of playing of the rest of the guys....middle of the road.

I like some of their old stuff too Professor. That would have been cool to see them back then....:uhuh:

Always was a big Aerosmith fan...saw them a couple of times....got to see them play New Years eve at the Orpheum, great show.

Also saw the off-shoot bands, Joe Perry Project (actually was my 1st concert) and the Whitford St.Holmes band

never liked em.
A few good tunes, but otherwise never thought they were as good as other bands playing similar music. I think Joe P is an lousy guitarist.

I love old Aerosmith. Live Bootleg era, even a few tracks from Get a Grip, but he is seriously starting to look like an old lesbian.

Selling out or not, they have remained musically relevant through 30 years... impressive, even if the music sucked the last few albums.

I don't listen to them much anymore, but I've seen them a bunch of times over the years. Aerosmith, Get Your Wings and Toys in the Attic are pretty good albums IMO. I like the older, less polished stuff from before they became senior citizens.

My aunt used to own an antique store on the south shore and Tyler used to go in when he was in town and buy vintage clothing from her. They still keep in touch to this day, and she says he's a really down to earth guy.

I have spoke to him on several different occasions and he is always very gracious, humble and down to earth. He lives here in town. Joe Perry lives a couple miles away from me and hardly ever is seen. You cant miss them in their expensive cars...Kramer and Whitford especially.

Eh, they are ok, Toys in the Attic was about it for me

I am not trying to make them out to be virtuoso's or anything but their first 2 albums were really good, after that my interest waned.

I thought everything up through Draw the Line was good. After that when they broke up and got back together they went to a more poppy, over-produced sound IMHO. Get your wings is also my favorite Aerosmith Album. Rocks had some great stuff on it too.

I'm a child of the 80's so "Pump" was and is my fav, I also love the "Cryin" era, but you guys might call that too poppy. I, like everyone else, was in love with Alicia Silverstone in those videos!

A good friend of mine from high school was always obsessed with them, so then I got into the older stuff and I've seen them a bunch of times and every time the show kicked butt, and when you see Joe Perry live, it's hard to say he's "middle of the road"

I think the thing with them is they have always managed to remained relevant and you could argue that has kind of over-exposed them and turned a lot of people off.

I watched a documentary once of their latter years ( late 80's early 90's). they were in the studio with some big time producer, you'd recognize his name. He was basically giving them the " I dont hear a hit single" speech and they were all following his lead. I thought it was sad that one of the leading bands in 70s hard rock was taking this approach. This was the same time Metallica was playing to sold out crowds, playing 12 minute tunes and basically had limited airplay. I really felt Aerosmith sold out, it was pretty sad watching them in the studio.
I think they have some classic songs and those songs will stand the test of time for decades. I have a massive cd collection of 70-80s hard rock and dont own one of their cds. I had lots of friends into them but they never really did it for me. I guess their biggest contribution to my life is producing the hot elf chick in Lord of the Rings......

I think it really dawned on me that they sold out when I got in the car of one of my black college friends and he had the Pump cassette mixed in with LL Cool J, Prince and De La Soul. This was a guy that wouldn't come into my dorm room if I had AC/DC playing.

Never been much of a fan.
I'll stick to listening to Steely Dan and real talent !:uhuh:

I've seen them over a half dozen times from late 70's to a couple months ago...wifey loves them so it's "all things Aerosmith" around here ( i do not share in her enthusiasm )but I"ll have to admit they were really good this last time....One thing irked me though was Joe did this guitar solo then was so "exhausted" after that he fell down and the crew had to carry him off stage....it was so cheese and fake.... maybe it might have worked if I was 15 and stoned :rotf2: . We saw the J.P. Project last winter and some of his playing was weak and sometimes a little painful. Not trying to dis him, everybody makes mistakes or has bad moments......enough from me..

Do you say Aerosmith or Arrowsmith?

Im not so sure I agree. AC/DC hasnt changed their style in almost 40yrs. I dont think Zeppelin did. Doors? Hendrix? Ramones? Because their tunes are used in commercials, movies, video games, etc, I dont think it alters their image to me. The songs came first, the commercialism later.
Aerosmith came of age in the time of album rock. People bought LPs, not singles. They then turned into Poison wannabes. I think they would have been just as succesful if they stuck to their roots. Most bands sell out at the beggining to make a name for themselves, Aerosmith sold out when they were legends. Seems weird. They're also in their 60s and look in the 20s so it may just be an ego/image thing. I dont fault bands that change with the times or alter their style. Not a fan of hit chasers.
Use an Aerosmith influenced band as an example - Guns and Roses. Hugely popular but most songs were pretty long, lyrics radio stations wouldnt play. I appreciate that. Just my 2 cents.

I think it was the lure of the money that got them back together....that's why they sold out.

Rock Music didn't become the sellout (read HUGE Dollars) that it is today until the 80's. So the fact that zeppelin, doors, and hendrix didn't sellout is kind of irrelevant.

I think more of bands that are still producing music today.

Im not getting your point, in the 80s rock music decline. New wave and pop took over. The 60s and 70s were the heyday. How many mansions did Zeppelin have? The Beatles? Stones? Sabbath? Alice Cooper? The whole rock star indulgence is from the 70s era.
There is pop - singles based music
Rock - which was more album based.

People bought the Stones albums, They bought ABBAs forty fives.
There were plenty of sell outs in the 60s and 70s.
So lets take some artists from the past 20 yrs - Janes Addiction, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, White Stripes, - did they try to make hits or make great music? I think they tried to make great music and some happened to make hits. All comes down to integrity to me.

No problem w/ this statement...Agree w/ pretty much all of it. I always think of the 60's as the Rock and Roll Renaissance....the 80's were the Dark Ages :hihi:

I think we're talking about 2 different types of "Selling out "....where you are talking more about Artistically....i'm talking more about Financially.....Trying to ring every last dime out of your music.

A lot of bands today are always trying to attach an event (i.e. Movies, TV Shows, Sporting Events) to their music.

There are still plenty of bands/performers that are staying true to their music...I'm not making a blanket statement that says ALL artists are sellouts....just saying that a lot of them now-a-days are more worried about bottom line when it comes to music.

I always seem drawn to a bands 1st couple of albums....they usuaully have the raw sound that they envisioned....before the big Record Companies step in and take over. then it becomes over-produced (i.e. Aerosmith).

If it wasn't about the mighty dollar....I wouldn't be paying a $100 or more for a ticket
