Winter Storage
 

Last winter I lost the structure I had used for years to cover the boat. It was that big wind storm. After 3K in damage to the boat I was determined to get a better place to put it.

My summer project was this new garage. 28 x 40 with 12' celings.
Also added a full dormer so it has the second floor too.

How many cars does it hold? NONE!

It has my boat, Kubota tractor, log splitter, 4 wheelers, lawn mowers, chain saws and any other power tool I can find.

Very nice to just walk in and work on the boat.

I am building a 34X32 X 14' 6' at the eves. The crane is in the driveway lifting trusses as I type this. Boat on one side. Tractor and assorted power equipment on the other. 12' door for the boat.9' for the other stuff.

I will post pics later today.

I designed and built the entire thing my self. I used SolidWorks for the drawings.

My only regret is that it took up a lot of my summer fishing time this year.

I have a 10' door & 9' The only thing I see is if I ever wanted to put a larger boat in, I would have to change the door. I have enough room to go to a 12' with a low overhead door track.

Big doors get expensive compared to the standard car doors.

Man am I jealous......

This is torture for me...I need one of these bad, real bad. I am putting this on my list now. If I didn't have two kids heading to college I would build one right now but I need to find a way to make this happen.

The Plans came from Just Garage Plans

I printed out the floorplan and my contractor drew up the detailed plans. We actually have overbuilt by a lot. We did a 6' foundation rather than 4'. Frame is all 2X6 and the roof is custom
trusses and 3/4 exterior plywood. Grace Ice and Water shield and architectural shingles to match my home.

I just traded some firewood for a propane forced hot air furnace that I will install when the builder is done.

I have lived here for 38 years and always wanted a big building for my boat, equipment, tools, etc. Kids are out of my hair and grown so now is the time to do this. What the hell. 1 or 1.5% interest on your money sucks. Might as well spend it on something I can enjoy and use and adds value to the property.

I agree with the over build.
I also put a full foundation and had to add a 10" thick wall in the back due to the slope of the land. Lots of people said just go with a floating slab, but in my town over 800 SQ Ft needs a foundation.

Also, 2X6 walls are required if you are over 10'. (or so I was told)
I figure it is good for future use anyway.

I ended up with 1 support in the middle of the beam due to the 40' length. I could have gotten away with a steal beam or go to "I" joists to cover the 28' span. (but would have increased the cost by 4K)

My 2nd floor has a full 8' head height for about 24' of the width.
It also left me space above that for light storage

My favorite of all was the ladder in the tractor bucket. Pump jacks only would reach 24' With the slope of the land I was about 3' short.

I just got the house apprased but have not seen the result. Garage cost me 31K in materials & foundation.
Labor cost me lots of promised fishing trips.

Man i love the second floor idea. I be able to do something but because of the trusses, I may be limited. Great job. I am about $5K more than you but that with all the labor

The ladder is safe, it can slip out, it's stuck in the bucket.

I have to find every use I can to justify the tractor.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like it.... It's just that being in the trades, I would get screwed for doing it. Osha would have me build a ten foot deck out of 2x8s, lagged into the sill plate.....:smash:
