Cup in Newport Yes or No?

America's Cup decision today....What do the locals think? Do you want it there? Pros? Cons? Economic impact outweigh everything else? And.... how will it affect the local fishing?

JohnR 12-31-2010 09:17 AM

Want it, YES. Will it happen? Probably not. Fishing? All those hiding on Aquidneck Island will have a more difficult time now and will be forced to spend more time over bridges.

Dick Durand 12-31-2010 09:33 AM

Awaiting the final decision and I'm unsure of Newport's odds. I do want it for the monetary boost and jobs it would provide the state. Also recall the glory days of Dennis Connors and Ted Turner in Newport. In any case I fish the other side of the Bay.

Nebe 12-31-2010 09:40 AM

Personally, I'd love to see it come back. That being said, the town can't handle the crowds.

As far as fishing does, it won't effect it very much IMO.

I would like to see it in Newport. Although I think the new facilities would have to be elsewhere, I just can't see the inner harbor handling the teams for 2 or more years. Maybe we can get rid of that last carrier and build a world class facilities down on that pier.

DZ 12-31-2010 10:44 AM

I live in Newport. Would like to see it but not if tax payers have to foot the bill. They have to tell me how to pay for it. I suggest a tax levy on all marinas, boat dealers, etc. They want it here - they should pay for the improvements at Ft Adams. That state park belongs to all residents of RI - I'd hate to see the park given over to another private entity like yacht racing. You already have Sail Newport taking over a section of my park. Try fishing off the floating docks at Sail Newport - they chase you off. I'm afraid of more space being taken over by the sailing crowd. The bilionaire from BMW Oracle is holding Newport and San Fransisco over a barrel. I'd kick him in the ass and send him to Italy if he's not happy.

Crowds have been down noticably over the last few years so it would be good economically.

basswipe 12-31-2010 04:40 PM

Its not going to happen.

Would love it to happen, with all of Jerry's contacts I'd be working nonstop for the next two years.

The Comittee has to announce today or some legal wragglin will have to occur. I'm thinkin SF has it, with Larry Ellison being out there, but who know's neither city has finalized anything.

Who's Jerry?

Kirby.I've worked for him for the past 17yrs.

Fishpart 12-31-2010 04:55 PM

I am a cynic, the whole thing is about pushing the price lower. Without Newport, SF has little or no competition otherwise

chefchris401 12-31-2010 04:56 PM

It would be great for businesses, as a chef I know the restaurants have been slower in past year, with this year being the worst in a long time.

As far as fishing I only fish at night and I NEVER see anyone except the two guys I fish with.

Most guys who fish Newport are blitz seekers.

Don't think it will happen though.

Okay, now I know who you mean. I didn't think you were in the boat business though.

Sources say San Francisco has America's Cup. | San Francisco Examiner

JohnR 12-31-2010 05:43 PM

Radio is stating that a SF paper is reporting that SF gets the Cup.

striperman36 12-31-2010 05:59 PM

Larry wins:

"The deal meted out will require Ellison’s team to invest upfront into Piers 30-32, just south of the Bay Bridge. In return, The City will provide free rent and longterm development rights on that and other nearby property for decades.

San Francisco will also invest millions in city services into the race, but city officials have said it is worth it in exchange to the $1 billion or more in tourist dollars they expect to come to the region during the race"

Newport doesn't have the space or money.

Clammer 12-31-2010 09:33 PM

no

BassDawg 01-01-2011 02:12 PM

Newport may not have the money, but if the right
ventures got behind a hosting push,,,,,,,,,,,,,it COULD happen.

for me and my viewing pleasure~~~
there is NO BETTER place on God's blessed seas to watch The America's Cup!! i also believe that the winds and waters off of the City by the Sea test a 12Meter's mettle better than most places, and certainly so when it comes to the placid Pacific. likewise, there is something so quintessentially New England about watching those majestic boats as they make the point at Castle Hill from a day's endeavors of tacking and jibbing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

while SF may have the city and the culture to pull it off,,,,,,,,,
by NO MEANS or stretch of the imagination do they have the America's Cup History that NPT does. logistics;smojistics!! NPT is a clusterfluke in the summer w/ or w/out The Cup. and as far as losing "your" Fort Adams, DZ, the sacrifice seems worth the boon to many facets of Newport's struggling economies tourism being at the fore.

it would be GREAT for the area businesses and, imho, would NOT impact the fishing at all,,,,,,,,,,,
doan we ALL know by now, there's no feesh in Newport, especially not in the summer!!??!!

Ummm, Jess.... There hasn't been a 12 meter built or raced in the Cup since 1987.

Lots of dough.

However, at the bottom it says that Newport may get one of the prelim events.

Not only that, but when they raced in Newport, they were so far out that you couldnt see them from shore. What you got to see was them being towed in and out by the support boats.

There is more than enough money to bring it to Newport.
The powers that be are too happy in their little corner to bother.

Won't ever happen nor will there ever be a NYYC sponsored boat ever again.

You can sail on a 12 any day you want in NPT,even pretend you are a hand in a simulated race. Some of those boats go to Saint Maarten for the winter for the same purpose.

Look how placid it is in the Pacific.

YouTube - America's Cup - Boats breaks and sinks

SD: all the boats are original race boats or trial horses. No new 12's have been built.
