Portly Angler 2011

Its that time of year - S-B Portly Angler competition ;) . Have you found yourself in this position before?
  • Waders getting a little tight?
  • Huffing and puffing more?
  • Wearing your wetsuit on new moons only?
  • Tired of the young whippersnappers beating you to your rock?
Have you been asking yourself:

"Does this wetsuit make me look fat?"

Knock down some of that spare tire, and join S-B members Biggest Friekin' Looser competition a/k/a the Portly Angler

2009 winner - ZachS
2010 winner - JRedfly

Cost, is one plug to winner. We'll arrange to get the plugs in early this year (trust me, that will be better, much better)

When does it begin? Seeing we have a late start, anytime starting over the next two weeks will certainly be OK. The longer you wait, the more disadvantage you may be under.

  • Weekly weigh ins?
  • Track percentage lost with greatest percentage winning.
  • No surgical or like methods. A friend had lap band surgery and lost 80 pounds in a couple months mostly due to the resulting infection. This doesn't mention the nasty operation needed to get the infection under control.
What else?

Who's in:

John R - Week 1, starting 320

(Really sad, pathetic, but at least 8 pounds less than this time last year)

chefchris401 01-01-2011 03:16 PM

I'm in, 270 on Jan 1st. :(

My plan is to get down to at least 220, my ideal goal is 205. And stay there.

Where do I send the plugs John ? I'll also throw in some bucktails and siwashs I tied.

Thanks and here's to a healthier skinner new year!!!!

As there wasn't a big enough looser last year, I'll repeat my offer of a neat and really rare early BigFish plug to the winner assuming they drop more than 35 pounds.

Good luck!

Had this week off and put on some poundage hanging around the house eating all the kids chocolate from Santa ( I have issues :uhuh:). Plus with all the snow I haven't been able to run. Got out today though wearing shorts and couldn't believe it was high 50's on Jan 1. The L St. Brownies must of thought they were in Hawaii.

Well this fat boy is in at 184 shooting for 20 pounds. May the games begin!!! :musc:

I lost 20 pounds last season! Cut out "ALL" the goodies I like, changed my diet by cutting out all white breads, potatoes and pasta as much as possible. Portion control I think was huge! Instead of 3 sandwiches or 3 hamburgers which was the norm......the rule was "1"! If I had a sandwich or a burger I had it on a deli slim roll, wheat. Also no beef burgers.....turkey burgers and they are pretty good actually! Riding my canal bike was also a huge benefit as I would do 15 miles a day a minimum of 3 days a week and most often 4 days a week! Kayak also gave me a great workout!!! I went from a personal high of 313 pounds to 293 pounds in 2 months and held there all season until the holidays came....ahhhhh the holidays! Back to 304 right now! My goal is to get back to 293 before the season starts in March and see how much more I can drop from 293 if I maintain the same regimen??

Good luck all!:)

The Dad Fisherman 01-06-2011 10:06 AM

Larry, Embrace the Potato...one of the healthiest veggies out there.

WHFoods: Potatoes

I agree w/ the pasta and the bread....but if you are going to do it....go whole wheat...a little better for you

the big key is calories.......the 1 sandwich thing is key.....I took that same approach...good one to have. Portions definitely make a difference.

but in the process you want those calories to be of the beneficial nature....don't give up eating things that are healthy for you.

BigFish 01-06-2011 10:21 AM

I did not mention that but we did go whole wheat on everything and the whole wheat pasta is excellent!! Its all or nothing with me and potatoes...butter, cream cheese the whole 9 yards! I don't enjoy them otherwise!! I like em' mashed with all the fixin's! See you next Thanksgiving Mashies!!

Ok here we go...I was at my sleep apnea doctor this week and I weigh 290. When I moved in with my lovely wife I was just over 250. Between no self control for Nana's (993 year old mother in law) baking ], no portion control and quitting smoking 2 years ago I am not liking the way I look for the first time in a long time.

I'm In

Holy Crap!

:eek5: Some big dudes on this site! I'm thinking a lot of you shopped in the Husky clothes section as kids. (My brother did). Good Luck all...I'm at 169lbs and need to get back down to 155-160lbs. If you don't do it for yourselves, do it for your Family.

Hhaha Okay. Thanks for sharing that! Good luck with dropping the poundage...

jredfly 01-08-2011 04:54 PM

For those of you thinking of joining the Portly Angler and those already in.

I am down a total of 50 pounds from my last two year checkup and I owe the Portly Angler contest for getting me started, giving me something to keep track of and a little added incentive of winning some nice plugs.

The way I did it was pretty similar to what Big Fish did. I got off the white flour based products (pasta and bread) and got onto wheat. Portion control was huge, plus educating myself on eating better food which seems to be an endless task. The last thing was the exercise which has been pretty cool because it has been a great example for my kids.

If you don't want to list your weight send a PM and just your percentage will be shown. So if you're thinking of getting in, just do it. It is a pretty good group of people and lots of fun. What do you have to lose but a few pounds. :jump1:
