whats going on is that the seal push the cod into to the shallower colder water and as a result the cods blood starts to crystalize... the cod slow down and then its a full blown feast for the seals.

a little seal porn to warm thy soul on this winter day..

that's great. we made a run down to race point a few years ago, first week of june, and got into a blitz of codfish for a half hour. it was the middle of the night and we were coming over the big dune on the south side. we get down towards the beach and my buddy says he can hear fish splashing. we jump out of the truck and start casting. next thing you know we have a bunch of market fish on the beach. cod on topwater- it was amazing. i know the canadian cod stocks were decimated but is it true there is no recreational fishery at all?

I just read an amazing book called simply "cod". By the author Tankursly (I think I have that correct). Cod was the driving force in the discover of America and many other places. It was also critical in the slave trade and fed the hundreds of thousands of slaves in the carribean who were growing sugar cane, making booze and growing spices. They were primarily fed salt cod. Even today you can find salt cod dishes on all the islands...yet people who have been eating for generations have never seen a fresh cod nor a cod head. Incredible book. It does talk about how the cod stocks from around the world have been destroyed and the pains going on to bring them back. It talks about how the governments and scientific experts for hundreds of years thought it was impossible to depleat the stocks. Many cod were over 5 feet long and weighed 160 lbs.

Author is Kurlansky... Great stuff... Also check out "Salt" and "The last fish tale". Phenomenal work

The spectators all seem too busy playing pocket pool rather than holding a fishing pole?
