Dave's Market in Smithfield RI
I went to Dave's market in Smithfield RI yesterday. For those who don't know, they are a small chain in RI with about 10 stores. High end stuff with a great deli, bakery (Sicilian Bread with a hard crust), fish, etc.
Well, I ended up not buying any fish because, low and behold, look what they have. "Fresh, wild caught, Striped Bass", $11.99 a pound. Full filets, skin on, about 14 to 16" long. Has to be VA or NC caught. |
14" - 16" filet is not from a 30 pound fish like the reports are alleging. Sounds more like its from a smaller legal fish. Perhaps not everyone is culling as the reports suggest.
You are a fisher and can catch your own. Its a good think you left it for others who are not so lucky... |
Paulie,
A P/R Holdover ,.,,LOL :fishin: |
Another story,
I was in an Asian market in Quincy this Sunday and they had a few bluefish - 99 cents a pound. In the summer, when bluefish are EVERYWHERE I always see them for over $3.50 a pound! I thought that was weird. Also saw a bunch of fluke heads (not sure where the bodies were) and was wondering where they got them |

Many years ago (approx 30) one of the Chesapeake bay states had a spring striped bass size limit of 13-15" commercial.
That size was taken so that the N.Y. restaurants could have -two dinner plates off each fish. That was about the time that Massachusetts had a 16" size limit. Trouble was that the market was flooded with Chesapeake fish by the time that Massachusetts fish arrived. Since that time strippers have been raised like trout for the food market. Maybe someone like Legal sea foods could fill in the blanks. That's all my Dementia will allow |

I know about farm raised Stripers but these specifically said "Wild Caught".

I can't imagine people paying $12 a pound for striper fillets. I eat some but you can always get almost any fish for less than $12 a pound. Cod , Haddock , fluke , swordfish and tuna all teaste better if you ask me.
I remember they used to sell farm raised Striper at the fish market in Montauk. That always puzzled me since there's a ton of fish going through that city from the local catches. |
I saw fresh striper last summer at the same price in the western Boston suburbs... waltham & lexington
