Sucks. I used to be able to play around and get good deals but no more. We want to go see my in-laws in CA during April and I cant get anything less that $600 per person, used to get it for $250

There's a site called Airfare Watchdog that I subscribe to. Every week they send the lowest fares to your email box. I just booked round trip non-stop tix on Jet Blue to Orlando for next month for $200 each.

I fly JetBlue as often as possible now. The added benefit is that you'll save an extra $50+ per person due to "First Checked Bag Free".

Booking early will save some $$, but prices rise and fall based on the time of year.
Booking now for next year will get you some cut in price, but the base price is still based on when you PLAN to travel.

So, if you booked a flight for Thanksgiving or Christmas now, it will still be more than if you booked for a year from today.
It's airline supply and demand for high volume seasons.
Also keep in mind that fuel prices can also direct (adversely) affect ticket prices, so sometimes it's a good thing to book early.
