Rod hack
Fixing a half dozen or so guides on various boat rods.
What's a good epoxy for after the thread wrap? on eBay there's 5 minute or 4 hour epoxy. Not making customs here just fixing meat sticks that will surely get trashed again. Anyone have a few ounces of epoxy and a spool of thread to sell/swap me even better. Save me the blind squirrel shopping spree. |
Flexcoat rod building epoxy
The 2 oz. kit is about $10 bucks and it goes a long way... |
Ok kool thanks

Mike, you want to borrow my rod lathe and spinner? Got thread. It's here.... My epoxy is old so should prolly get new.
|
No but thanks. Not making a project out of it just fixing some old beater rods. Last time I did all the epoxy peeled back off.

5 minute is a waste of time and effort. it will yellow and crack and peel. Your best bet is to get the smallest unit of two part rod finish. Its formulated to be more flexible than the regular epoxies.
In a pinch , laquer is better than 5 minute epoxy. |
I've ordered 4oz of rod wrapping epoxy. And chef sending me some thread. I'll post pics of my super custom wraps. Maybe go pro lol

Most of the custom builders that I talk to prefer Aftcote over FlexCoat.

The trouble is Flexcoat is the most readily available and sells in very small package sizes. Flexcoat actually sells in these little foil packets with enough of each part to do 1 light coat on a guide set. I bet there is less than 10 CC total. They also have sizes in small increments in bottle like 2 OZ or 4 OZ etc. I seldom see Aftcote in the less than pint or quart or even gallon kit sizes. |
