You can find an article I wrote about this some time ago at Mako Mania SportFishing - Release them right

Good information. As a fly fisherman I crush barbs and catch and release almost all my fish. My daughter however has reminded me I release the fish only after mangling its face.

It's not often but occasionally I gut hook or gill hook a bass. I don't doubt the fish dies.
