Wood issue?
 

So last week finished up about 80 plugs and sealed them up using the spar urethane spirits blend, 60/40, new batch.

About 14 plugs came out with a jelly on them and are alot darker and heavier than the rest.

The jelly looks like old spar urethane after it sits around. It wipes right off and the plugs dried fine, but still are heavier and stink a lot more than the others.

Is it just the wood??

Are they safe to paint and finish??

Or should I make Christmas ornaments out of them?

The rest of the plug are fine and show no signs of anything.

Think just some funky pieces of wood mixed in?

How long did you soak them?? Did you wipe them off after you removed them from the Spar/spirits mix?

I've been soaking my plugs about an hour, I did some cut test and hour gave me full coverage thru the blank.

Yeah wiped down after taking them out.

they come out with the jelly on them.

Just my .02 cents but I do not think you need "full coverage" thru the plug. I soak mine in BLO/Mins for only 1 minute and it has been more than enough to give my plugs great protection from water absorption without overloading the plugs. If you are using AYC as I said it is only my opinion but AYC is very resistant to water absorption on its own and a light soak in the BLO/Mins for 1 minute has proven more than enough.

Let me clarify about "resistant" to water absorption.....that is not to say that it will not absorb water but it resists the intrusion of water to a point.

Is it dishwasher safe?

I have had the same problem with AYC. I think it's the sap in the wood. The sap in the wood reacts with the Spar Ureathane and turns it to jell. If you leave the plug bodies in the can to long it will spoil the can of urethane. It also takes a lot longer for these bodies to dry out.
