Red MacGregor Orkney Brewing Company.
Last summer I was in Acadia National Park and went to a bar in Southwest Harbor. I tried a Red MacGregor and man it tasted good. Maybe because I hiked a lot that day. Really good.
So back in CT i tried to find some and no one had it or heard of it. So I emailed the brewery in northern Scotland and eventually I got an email that first when from Scotland to Boston distributor then to Brooklyn distributor and then to me. And still no one sells in CT. I was in West Springfield at a Costco and went to some big liquor store to get my son in college some 12 packs.- (hey he is 19). And low and behold- they had the whole Orkney lineup. Red MacGregor, Dark Island, Skull Splitter. So if you ever see some try it. |
had skull splitter....
what would you compare the red too? |
Red MacGregor is in the same category as a Smithwicks but the Red i more bitter and more complex, This is some guys review from Beer Advocate that is a little over the top but describes it.
Ruby red and clear. An unusually white head (given the color of the beer) that was nice and foamy. Bitter with a nice cherry taste that balanced very well with the malty backbone. A touch thin, medium carbonation and a pleasant amount of lingering bitter cherry in the aftertaste Probably my favorite Scottish Ale to date. Very enjoyable beer! |
Interesting
i was a big Smithwick's fan there for awhile
i'll give it a whirl so your not a fan of Belhaven Scottish Ale i take it. |
