Another "New One"
 

Hey guy's , my name is Douglas and I have a passion for Musky fishing. When I'm not fishing I've built a couple boats for row trolling, and I'm always working on yet another lure. The last is the reason for checking in here. I've already looked through quite a few threads, enough to find all kinds of great information from sealing, to all the great jigs and special purpose tools. I build many different types of lures from swimmers, jerk baits, poppers, crank baits, trollers, twitch baits, spooks, gliders, creepers and dive and rise pull baits. I do see a lot of salt plugs that I know would work well on Musky like, darters, pencil poppers, needles and surfster types, just to name a few. I've been known to go the extra mile when it comes to finishes, but I will only do that after it performs as it should. I've also been over to the "Dark Side" of building that involves RTV molds and cast solid resin pieces. Thats it for now, I'm always willing to learn and equally willing to share info.

Here are a few. The popper is a resin cast piece ,as well as the three shallow swimmers. The Shad is a native forage fish ,it's poplar with a foil finish.

Thanks guy's, I do all my Musky fishing right here in Wisconsin, some locally and some in the beautiful, peaceful North woods. A lot of the water there is Gin clear spring fed or glacial lakes. Those fish tend to stay a little deeper and have no problems seeing anything near them, thats one of the reasons for the detail, the other is that I enjoy doing it. I don't always paint natural styles because as with any other fish, chartreuse, black, flo-orange and many other colors can be the hot ticket on any given day. Heres one painted in a "match the hatch" creek chub pattern ( a real creek chub, ha ha )

Just beautiful, what type of weight do you end up with using resin? Are they solid? Can the weight be adjusted using some sort of micro balloon/filler type product, do you weight them with additional lead placed strategically to alter their swimming action?

I'd be happy to put a couple threads together, let me get some pics. Real quickly about the resin lures. Yes, it is a solid piece with micro-balloons added for buoyancy and lead added on some for desired action. I prefer a two part mold system so I can add the thru-wire and ballast before pouring the resin. As with anything else consistency is king. When you "dial in" your resin formula, your copies will be true to the original. Resin lures have their place, and some benefits like duplication, no fear of water intrusion and it takes less than 2 minutes for the poured piece to harden. However, off-gassing, tiny pinholes and plastic adhesion issues are a few new problems that have to be addressed. That being said, to me nothing beats a wood lure. And not just any wood lure, but that one. You all know what I'm talking about here, you've just made 10 of the same type and they all are pretty close, but that one just seems to outperform all others. That one. Thats the one we tie on first, catch the most fish on and of course it's the one we fear we'll lose. Isn't that why we make so many?
