American Labrador breeder- recommendations needed
 

Looking for a new family addition and want to purchase an American type labrador pup. Been doing some research and visiting some kennels this week, but want to expand a little more. Can anyone recommend a kennel/breeder in our area? What's a reasonable price for an AKC dog? Been quoted anywhere from $850-$2,000 so far.

Subscribe to "Retriever News". This is the best source for locating high quality retrieve pups and gun dogs. You will often find that you can get a top quality dog from the mid west at a much better price. You can also verify OFA certifed dogs going back several generations.

Can't help but remember talking dogs with Habs.......... Might want to see if Habs Jr is in the loop with whoever his father dealt with....

Mike my parents just got a lab from Brookstone Labradors in Kingston and he is great. The breeder is excellent and very good at finding the right match for your needs. If your in the Pembroke area let me know.

Gunning Island Kennels in South Dartmouth Ma. I have gotten two dogs from him. He has many champion dogs in feild trials and obedience. Usually has anywhere from 10-16 dogs on site and doesn'nt over breed. The dog I have now is four and is an awesome dog. He is a very solid dog in excellent physical condition, although he's 99 pounds. Paul and Pauline Botehlo are very nice to deal with too. PM me, I can send you some pics.

I got my dog from a smaller breeder in Georgetown MA, he is not a business but a very experienced amateur / semi pro AKC/HRC trainer with great dogs and has really become a good friend of mine. He just started a website Rocking Retrievers Home. I seriously can't say enough about Bob. If you look at it, "Layla" is my dogs mom and "Ringo" is his brother. Here is a picture of my dog Hudson.

I have been at AKC competitions with Paul Botehlo (mentioned above) and he seems like a decent guy with good dogs. I also have extensively worked with Lois Monroe out of Heart and Soul Retrievers and she has some very good dogs. Her website is Heart and Soul Retrievers and although not the best site she has great dogs and does a good job training them. I just checked the site and her dog Faith had a litter with a couple pups left. I thought one of the best resources is Labrador retreivers of Greater Boston at LRCGB: Home. You'll find tons of great info there on all types of labs and local breeders.
I could go on for a long time with this stuff, if you have questions drop me a PM and I would be happy to give you a call. I was very into dogs before the arrival of my children a few years ago, and now don't train or hunt as much but love them all the same.

If your not planning on showing/hunting/trials and just looking for family pet please consider a rescue dog. There are a TON of labrador rescue groups out there and more than a TON of dogs that need great homes.

I am a golden retriever man myself. When looking for a place to board my golden for 2 weeks during my honeymoon, I thankfully found Jennifer Broome who owns Quinebaug Kennels in the northeast corner of Connecticut.

Jennifer is well known as a trainer of hunting dogs, and she is also a small, serious breeder of labs. She used to take her dogs to some of the hunting/fishing shows in CT and Mass.

Anyway, I love her for boarding, and she has a good reputation as a breeder. Her dogs are field stock as opposed to show stock, bred more for ability and temperment than looks.

I have seen her dogs in action, they are awesome. Jen is super friendly. I'm not sure her website mentions her breeding program, but you could ask her about that. You could not go wrong.

If your looking for a great family dog with strong hunting credentials, my son's buddy's Lab just had pups that have german shorthair in them. Looks like a lab but points like a pointer. I think we might get one.

My present dog came out of this kennel. Very high end field dogs. Frank is a top notch breeder and field trial competitor, and takes his dogs deadly seriously. Not to mention, his kennel facility is world class! He also screens both the bitch and male for genetic defects inherit disorders.
I realize he's out in Dowling, Mich, but he has family in Ma (Weymouth) and he's up this way often, and will actually deliver a pup if possible. He also has started dogs available.

Get a golden, it's going to end up as your wife's dog anyways and she'll prefer the curls (as well as not having to stare at the dog's genitalia).

Goldens are worse.
I had great luck with changing my dogs diet. Forget the vet., ask the people at the feed and grain store.Really improved my old labs coat.

curly coated retriever is a good breed. I have to say Hab had some good stock for field trials.Lots of sensible choices offered but you still haven't said if you are interested in a dog for anything other than a pet.Will this dog have a job on the course?If you get a dog with a lot of drive,it may not necessarily make the best pet for the home.Something to think about,but after owning a dingo for as long as you have this might seem calm. I had a lab for 13 years and still miss him although he has been gone for 6 years.FWIW,Cole is smarter and more obedient than any retriever I have met to date.Also doesn't shed a dog per week.Hard to come by but worthy of consideration.
