Rod Storage
 

How do you guys store your rods? I want to hang from the rafters in my cave but I'm having trouble finding the right hooks. Need them big enough for the offshore rod butts but the only ones I can find a depot & lowes are too big and would hang down too low. How to you guys store them? Pics would be great too.

u can use bunji cords or hang some dowels from the rafters with hooks and chains or good rope.

got any scrap plywood? just cut some long skinny pieces of plywood and punch holes in them with a hole saw..I'll post some pictures up tomorrow

Ace / big box hardware stores have the rubber coated hooks that can be attached / hung from ceiling. I have several sets I bought, just never got around to hanging them :devil2:

I hang mine rods from the basement rafters. I cut up wire coat hangers, shaped them like a 'J' and made a loop for the screw with needlenose pliers.
aside from the wife being pissed that I doubled up a couple of her shirts for hangers, it was cost free and works like a champ.

**use screws when going into rafters, hammering in nails can crack grout or wallboard above.

second the rubber coated j hooks , many sizes and styles.

Thanks guys. The only rubber J hooks if found are really long and hang a tittle low. I'll keep searching.

I like the coat hanger idea too.

I'd rather use hooks vs wood as it is a little easier to get them in and out.

x3 go to truevalue there like 3 bucks buy a set and try em i bet they wont hang too low. Unless you have a weird height in the basement

if you mount the j hooks up high on the joists it may give you enough headroom

I like that idea but the cealing is closed and I don't have access above the joist unless a pull the cealing down. I think the j hooks will work fine as i have a lot of headroom.

What is your ceiling height? What do you plan on for the walls?

I hang my rods on the wall of garage: 2 x 4 with ~1 1/2" slots. Got the idea from one of the TV Man Cave shows.

Second on Niko's hangars. I use them in the garage but I have hi ceilings.

Here's my setup. It ain't pretty but it works,the rods are real easy to get in and out.

Job Lot had ladder holders that are 12" wide j-hooks. Flushmounted to the bottom of the joists; no headroom issue

10' and under are stored in a locked closet built into my false chimney.

Longer ones that I use in season are stored on J-hooks in my basement. I have an outside bulkhead that makes getting them in and out a snap.

My "inactive" stash is stored in the rafters of my shed.

I got big hooks from a curtain department. They are decorative hooks for the end of curtain rods and have about a 4 inch gap. I use two about 7 feet apart and lay the rods in them along the wall horizontally.

I've tried the hook idea and I ended up buying a bunch of Berkley rod holders.They can be mounted vertically or horizontally,are space saving,neat and practical.

I got these at Harbor Freight and I'm very happy with them.
4 Piece Self-Gripping Hangers

2x4, whatever length you need. With either a cutout type bit attachment(used for drilling through doors for a lock cylinder) or a 1" wood bit, drill through the 2x. Than cut the 2x in half, drill though, near the end and use long hex bolts , threaded rod or even that plumber's pipe hanging straping to attach to the rafters.

Well, thanks guys for the ideas. I fianlly got some time to make up some holders. OD Mike sent me a pic of his and I liked it a lot as it was very cheap to make (PVC Pipe and some wood trim board). It also looks nice. Thanks OD!

third ditto. They also make them flat with a little upturn on the end. Job Lot has them cheap.

i lean mine against any stable surface in my garage - lawnmower, kids bikes, spare tire, etc

i count 21 rods,i was thinking i had a rod addiction

I use to have a similar rod rack to Ryan560 but the lines would always get caught up in the round section of the rack. My buddy Owen came up with using the PVC and I'm having zero issues with the lines....
