News from our southernmost member, Empirekitchen, from just outside Wellington (the quake epicenter is across the channel waters in Christchurch):

Hans Renner commented on FB wall post.
Hans wrote: "Phil , its bad mate . Ever seen liquefaction in real live colour , there was a whirlpool 2 1/2 m wide in the middle of the main street when its miles from a water source! Buildings that had not been rebuilt from the last one now totally flattened . Ones that were only 30 yrs old , and NZ has strong construction codes falling down . Death toll sits at 65 , and they are flying in dogs and search crews from aussie , but there is a lot of damage at the airport . Mate its a war zone !"
