I live in a house that is not a primary residence, i pay all the taxes on the place. I dont have a problem paying the property tax, well this year with a 70% increase i was a bit pissed. But i got a bill about the personal property tax. They want to tax it all. My boat, kayak, tv, dvd, computer, coffee maker, stove, fridge. Yeah, even tools. You name it they are taxing it. I called the assessor in my town to ask about this new bill. He said that it is nothing new, but that it was never enforced in the past. Now the town will be "religious" about enforcing it. IT will be a chilly day in hell when he comes to my house wanting to come inside for a look.

I think the law is where the boat is located on June 1 that's the town that's entitled to the excise tax.
I keep my boat in Boston and pay my excise tax to Boston. I live in Franklin and every couple of years they try to hit me up for the excise tax and I always have to take my paid excise tax from Boston down to the town hall and explain this to them and they reluctantly agree that again I am correct and tell me no tax due. |
Too many taxes. Between fed income tax, state income tax, sales tax, property tax, license fees, registration fees, etc.. it doesn't leave much for the necessities. Maybe if they just cut some spending.

Ron,
After 30 + years of boat onwership I had to pay p/p tax last year to the town for the first time on the boats, the rate on the boats was lower, but still another way into our pockets. Chris |
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to many taxes and fees.
Then go down the CC list of what you spent at West Marine, Defender, JD, and your favorite tackle shops not to mention fuel... this industry is going too far with the expenses for boaters/fishermen... This is why most people can't stomach owning a boat....and that is IF everything runs great...if you have a major breakdown, :wall: They don't charge me for keeping it at the house but the local delivery guy charges more for delivery/blocking than the mainland boatyard for winter storage. I remember my sister was visiting from NC and said, we are thinking of getting a boat and asked what kind of mileage I get... Mileage? I said,...oh about 2 or so. 2??? ...your kidding right???? no, really I said and that is pretty good. Her response was, what a waste, there is no way I will ever buy a boat. Power Boating industry is in a death spiral with no way out. There is no "fix" even on the horizon. People will down size until it collapses completely. I have to laugh when I see boats with triple 350's cruising along a @ 100gal+ per hour. That is 5 bills/hour just to use the boat. Not to mention depreciation and other associated costs. |
Also, it's up to the town to enforce excise tax. Some towns don't charge it, other do.

It is why it is a lot easier, when asked for a donation(s) to say;
"I gave on my 1040". And as has always been said, those who pay the most (in taxes) use the least amount of services/benefit the least from them. At least I know I'm doing my part. It is the only way I can look on the bright side of things. I'm sure lots would love to change places with the "haves". Fortunate are we that even have boats/property. |
The day someone sends me a tax bill for having a kayak, that day will ring out in infamy (for me) for I will surely have seen the end of days!
I they (town, city, state or even federal) expect me to pay THAT tax, they will be pryingh out of my cold dead hands from inside my coffin! They can all just go to H*LL! |
Tell em it's a commercial fishing vessel and to go pound sand.
