Ultimate Eel / Rubber Rod
 

OK folks, if you were to design the best rod for decent size throwing eels, spinning, what would you get? I'm contemplating getting a rod this weekend or something built over next month and want to hear suggestions for the great eel rod. Any 10-15% extra on an eelcast may make a difference....

I like my 1322 for eeling meat for bigger eels but still very sensitive. I think it was westport that said he could feel an eel fart on his. That being said I would have it wrapped. I have power pro holding replacement guides on it. And the grips are a bit cheesy on the factory rod.

I don't throw either anymore, but I suspect that casting an eel far is more about smooth acceleration into a big lob than high modulus state of the art rod blank hard fast power.

It will be interesting to hear what people say, but I'd be thinking along the lines of long and slow......maybe a XRA1261....perhaps with a bit off the butt?

Until you stick a decent fish at our old July spot and can't turn him before the lobster gear... you'd be crying for an M then :jump1:....

The three of us need to get back to that spot again this year... we got lazy the last two seasons....

I built a rainshadow sw 1209 conventional for Eeling and I love it. It's rated 1-5 oz. Cms had the blanks on sale at one point for 50 bucks. They are probably 100 right now. My buddy called me today to see if I wanted his blank for 50 bucks. Let me know John if your interested. Great blank for cheap money.

I got an SSU 11' one piece that was a surprisingly good eeling rod. I like the 11' for the eels. It gives a nice deep bend without too much torque on the eels lips. I have a 1021L that i like also, but i prefer the 11. I noticed i get more ripped lips on the 1201, but sometimes i just dont want to deal with the 11'er.

My SUR1266S Loomis worked great for eels.Was pretty fast but not super fast like an Arra.Launched many eels with that rod.This year I jumped on the mojo train for spinning.From what I've read and heard is that it's a slower rod and for me that means it should work fine for eels and plugging.Time will tell I guess.Make sure you let us know which rod or blank you get and how it works.

OK, I'll be the skunk at the Garden Party..10 Foot Ugly Stik rated 1-6 oz. for eels. My fav. 6 is asking a bit much tho.

Back beach Your ugly stick reminded me of fishing with Charlie Ferlita,a great rodmaker who wraped a 10fter for himself for eeling.
Charlie made some beautifull rods back in the day but used a uglystick one season that i fished the beach with him.

Myself,iUSE A 9"conventional,glass and a 11ft zziplex spinner.

Eels are like marshmallows,they only cast so far.

EEl rods remember all wrapped convench.. .

Lami glass blank.. think it was a bt not sure chucks HUGE eels thumper knows this rod..

I have a bsb 121 3m that was cut to 9'6" built by Ray Boucher from hope valley.. Great rod.. I also have the ssu 1321mh the 11 footer.. Cant lay into eels with out leaving them behind..

Personaly Ill sat this a softer blank aka slower action always better for eels.. I have a 1201l GSB and chucks eels nice I know Thumpers 1201m also does.. I say try to stay away from fast action blanks for eels my personal expierence they just rip hooks.. Fast actions are great for plugs cause you can lay into them no hook to rip out..

Personally john you wanna fish eels come to the dark side.. A 1021l or m and an abu 7k series with the slow speed is like eel perfection..

I guarantee you that if you and i were standing side by side... both using a 1201L, But i am using an avet and your using an abu 6500 ( what he was using) I will stop that fish before the lobster pots.

Owning a 6500 pro rocket and recently purchesd Avet 5.3:1 and a saltist Im gonna tell ya a big secret Nebeee every convench has the same drag for me... My left thumb.. If the fish is pulling through drag to much I got a thumb for it.. now granted I have parted 50# leaders that way but hey it works...

Now that being said lift power??? umm I dont lift fish with my rod.. ( here loud expolsion envisoning this act) I will say I have had BOTH my gsb a 1201L convench and a 1321L spin both folded in a u before litterally.. and all i ever managed was to rip lip and straighten hooks..

My statements come from please remember I spend an un godly amount of time trashing my hands at work on boats.. so I have this interesting grip like visegrips..so putting a thumb toi it is like the kiss of death for my terminal tackle usually..

Also please read EELS.. as per my definition as Thumper can attest to is usually something resembling a conger for me.. at about 3/4 inch round.. I throw very LARGE eels when i do.. so my casting with them is much different to get themto cross Q or W then most.. and they usually sound like a huey taking off... ( Military helicopter)..

Now as I said my L does great my M (spinning) I had did great its more the action of the rod .. You dont want something with fast action due to the energy created on cast at point of affiction.. AKA the hook it just rips out.. why the older "noodle" 3m blanks and gsb and the current sb blanks all work great for eels and bait.. I own a ssu 11 foot 1 piece and its great for plugs.. tried with eels and ripped a ton.. Now at $2 a piece down this way id rather lose 5 or 10% of distance when pluggin so I dont rip eels all night.. I do fish both back and forth so..

Now back to my usual Islander self.. What in the name of christ do you wanna do that for bla bla bal.. yada yada yada:buds:
