Found this laying on the ground in a far corner of my yard that is thick with brush, trees, etc. What is it?

superfund site, thats where the govt. marked the areas of high toxic material required for clean up

HugeDinghy 04-13-2011 01:37 PM

a survey marker

yes it means there is a point somewhere close by that was used in surveying a point that is stored in the usgs database in DC. Look around on the ground there will be a small triangle shaped metal survey setting that will point north.

usgs survey marker - Google Search

They look like this.

I saw that once, but no evidence of associated material, guess people got pissed and chased surveyors off each time!

The new World Geodetic System was called WGS 84. It is currently the reference system being used by the Global Positioning System

RIJIMMY 04-13-2011 02:57 PM

I bet there is a missile silo buried somewhere right near there!

Thanks for that info. I'll be able to sleep well tonight.

If you can find a USGS Topographical map there wil be a little black X with BM next to it in the location where the marker is. With a map and that marker to get yo close it should be cinch to find.

Already you violated the law by unearthing it...I'm telling!:rotf2:

There is one near a spot I fish. It's from 1920 something. It's a round badge stuck to a rock. It says fines or prison for disturbing it.

Next thing you know, you'll be tearing the warning tags off your mattresses. :smash::rotf2:

I saw that one last fall. There was a metal box right next to it with some geocaching stuff in it.

MarshCappa 04-14-2011 10:16 AM

I'll look for a marker on the ground. That part of my yard is really grown in during the summer. I was cleaning litter when I came accross that sign. I live behind what used to be a school and is now an old age home and accross the street from that marker is a wetland conservation area.

Pretty sure its a different one. It's one of the very few spots that nobody fishes that I know of.
