race point
when do the birds typically shut down race pt for orv access?
|
As I recall usually by 4th July!:uhuh:
|
Just thin, 5-6 years ago there would be fights online for mentioning the Race permits were up. Wonder if the seal lovers drive their Prii over the beach.
|
As soon as the plovers nest and have eggs
|
They start closing sections down in june
|
As I recall in July access to the north side tends to be spotty. After July things settle down and much of August there is access to most of the trail. The best fishing often times is not right at the point. But what do I know?

it usually starts by June, complete by mid month, then sections start to open early July. Rarely is the whole beach open until mid August.

get the overnight parking pass, for the seashore lots.. for free at the rangers station, best value, and one you can use all season, unlike the oversand, which is useless most of the time.....

Put the boat in at the Pamet River. Its a 20 minute run to the race from there. Screw the birds the only thing they are good for is a squab dinner.
|
The Race is not even a ghost of what it once was. . . . real Fn shame.
|
there's been pieces of beach open the last two 4th's. No rush for stickers this year - I got #98 on Thursday at the end of the day.
the overnight parking lot pass that Karl mentions is available at the visitor's centers, not the ranger stations. |
correctamundo mikey2na, brainfart on my part

I am not getting my sticker this year. The place isnt what it once was. To bad too thats where I fell in love with surf fishing
|
Me too SC413! I have not gotten a sticker in 5 seasons now! I endured the long lines several years ago and it was worth it....now its not worth being the only one in line???? Truly sad....and I miss what it once was.
|
Yeah Yeah Yeah...there is no fish at the CCNS, none at all......lol

It's nothing like it used to be near shore. If only the bass we V jig a few miles out going for tuna would ever return . . . . . |
it may not be what it once was but still a great place. i've seen some nice fluke from the beaches too. my kid will love it
|
I still love that place and will get a sticker every year until I can't. The wifey likes it, that makes things a bit easier for me. If you're willing to walk a bit or have a kayak/boat to get by the seals, you can still have epic days. I remember when I had to smuggle pizza in over the dunes from the airport one year when I was trying to get my sticker. That's how crowded it used to be. I still was a bait dunker back then. The coffin was always full. Things have changed.

The alpha predator shows up more and more every year. So hopefully things will improve. There are still plenty of fish to be had. Just gonna work a little harder for them

We still get plenty in the boat.
But I would so much prefer to have my feet in the sand. I'm sure I've spoiled myself with how it was in the late 70's and on though. |

I know I sound like an old fart but, it's this size fish I miss, which use to be common enough as to be expected whenever we went to the back.
Sure you can get a lot of the 15 to 25 pound fish in the boat, we do, but you don't see these too much anymore. We got an awful lot like this from the sand. It is the surf fishing I miss the most, bass fishing isn't the same to me in a boat. I'm convinced it's the seals keeping the fish spooked off the beach. They're close, but they don't get tight to shore with the regularity they did pre seals. I know you get the odd day or two but, the frequency of old is gone. I bet the bass can smell them easily. Just an observation from someone with many years of Race sand in his shoes. |
Knowing that the seals are here to stay.... those pictures still depress me.

Holy crap! who's the kid in the 2nd pic!!

This is how I remember the Race, fishing at night, with eels and watching 40 lb'ers come in like this one courtesy of the howler monkey.

Makai is right the same thing happened on the flats in Chatham. The seals are an absolute nuisance on the cape. The eastham side of the nauset cut is also loaded with them. That cut on the inside used to be loaded with flat fish not anymore. I hate seals. Everytime I hear about white sharks it makes me happy.
