Jamestown Bridge
Anyone know what's up with the old bridge?? Is the plan for a fishing pier still going to happen????
|
what a great facility that would be! ...but you know the story- loud trash tossing people would have it closed in now time.
|
last I heard was its unsafe ..............BTT they tear it down ....... the cost of putting something will be the excuse to never see it happen ;:fury:
|
Nope.It is being removed.
Too bad it was allowed to deteriote to this point. What a place it would've been.I remember my childhood with my dad on the Meliville piers, would've been great to relive those days again on a place that would have been always for fishing. |
everytime i drive over the new bridge i think 'why cant i fish off this bridge?" It has sidewalks... cant see why you couldn't.. pedestrians are allowed on it..
just saying.. ;) |
Im gld you brought it up Eben, i think about it every time i drive over the bridge. I probably wouldnt fish off of it but it would be a good option. I would imagine the toggin, scup, squid and flukein would be pretty good off of the bridge. I would think the revenue from the saltwater licenses could be used to get it ready for fishing.

Every time time I pass that old structure I think, what a great fishing pier that would be.:)

I thought Mederious and his group at RISAA saved the old bridge and it WAS going to be a fishing pier. ...or maybe I dreamt that

And it's true that the old bridge section is beyond repair and will be torn down. Enough NIMBYs in that area put up a stink about it that the idea and effort got bogged down, and now it's too late to save the old section. And I'm SURE it's way too expensive to build a new one for the foreseeable future. Too bad... |
Bummer. :(.

Nebe,
the locals won again .another not in my back yard, But I Really can,t blame them ....... IMO for the most part the [slobs] that would be using it .. never leared the words .. take it home with you .................... Also that was a good place to fish bottom fish ............... But it was a GREAT place to fish Bass & some blues ... fishng the shadow line with bucktails or floating back buckies & eels ><>><><:grins: |
I've heard the stories from a guy that fished it many years ago with bucktails and big rinds.Sounds like it would have been a nice pier.I think we lost it last year because they decided it was unsafe and under bad conditions the wreckage of it would compromise the new bridges structural integrity. So we got shot down.

last i remember on this subject when we were talking about it in risaa, which was about 1.5 years ago, was that the bridge had to come down due to homeland security (i think) said it was a threat/hazzard being so close to the current bridges. that, on top of the existing condition made it an unsafe pier. their were plans to rebuild it in the exact same spot, but the nimby's came up. there was talk of moving it somewhere else, but again, the nimby's keep up the fight. i know that it came up in some recent town meeting in jamestown, but i am not sure what was said or done. i know risaa has a jamestown bridge committee.
personally, i dont see much being done with ri just about bankrupt. maybe it'll get torn down in its existing status, but i do not see anything new going up in the near future. it'll be a long fight. |
What could still be done with the state land that accesses the former bridge is to make it a state boat ramp/fishing/clamming/picnic area. I made this suggestion to RISSA once the fishing pier idea appeared to be killed. This land still belongs to all RI residents under the auspices of the RI dept of transportation. Really a perfect location as it has ample parking at the commuter lot up the hill.

even when it was still a topic of discussion I was wondering where they were gonna put parking...doesnt seem to be enough space there, and getting back on the road would be a PIA

the dog killer used to slam fish off that bridge
