1st ride of the year on the beach. Even though the whales were the main attraction, my sharp eyes and keen intellect noticed that something seemed a bit out of place. Was it the bones of an old wreck - ribs, planks, pegs and big old square copper nails?

was it a harp seal being chased into the water where it belongs by tourists?

He fetched up as of high tide Friday morning. They are killing the scallops out there, he came from New Bedford to get into the scene - at $10 a lb at the dock I'm surprised every boat in the northeast isn't there.

My pics were just after the high tide Friday afternoon. He wasn't even close to being able to free himself, there was a foot difference in the tides, and unless he got off this morning he has oceanfront property for a while. The captain won't leave the boat, I think it has something to do with marine salvage laws. At least he has a load of yummy scallops to eat until the next spring tides or the tug shows up.

The bones of that wreck are strewn over a mile of beach. There are 5-6 ribs (in the 1st pic you can see a 2nd one in the background) and a couple of planks. Very good condition - usually when I see these they are at least starting to rot.

Perhaps he was pursuing the scallops and the scallops sensing this, drew him in to the sand, like the sirens of ol'.

I would feel fairly certain that djlesco's excuse #10 was the correct answer. After spending years dodging crackheads towing scallop gear all night, you start to wonder why the first requirement when boarded by the Coast Guard for even a routine inspection, is not a urine test for the operator.

I'm sure those scallops are going to start to smell reallllll good after a few more days on a boat w/ no power.

Reminds me of the out-of-town truck drivers who are constantly tearing the roof off their trailers on Storrow Drive.

Saw a young couple turn their Pensky moving truck into a convertible a few years ago on Storrow. Looked like a furniture store exploded. As if moving around Boston isn't miserable to begin with...

Tough luck though. My brother and I came across two guys in about the 30'er on Long Neck Beach on Chappy a few years ago, middle of the day, just a few minutes after they went aground. I think their was more going on between them than they wanted known.

Maybe we should drop odf some ice... I think he's going to needed it... By the way anyone want to buy some scallops I got a guy whose blowing theses things out the door...lol..omg what a tool..

Didn't think of the power aspect. With the parade of tourists headed out to look at the whales he should have started cooking them up and sold seafood platters - he would of had some pocket money to tide him over until he starts his new job.

You must have come by right after we did. That same seal (pretty distinct color patter) was rolling around in the gully right after where the path goes high and tight to the dunes.

When we got there, the Coasties were still trying to figure out what happened. My guess was that he had the cruise control on and wasn't paying attention. Then, the rip and big winds we had dragged him onto shore - each wave picking him up and dropping him a little further onto the beach.

Also, I did find an example of my favorite kind of seal...
