You must put in alot of time, what works for some won't work for others..I couldn't tell you what works best for me because I use many different of bait depending on time of year location and weather conditions.... For me in early season i like soft baits, and color choice is pink bubble gum, again that works for where i fish...anything I can help you with I will....

I cannot recommend enough the 4-5" pearl Queen Cocahoe on a jig head. Very effective soft plastic bait.

Black Mambo Minnows at night.....
Pearl Storm Shads during the day....... At or near outflows is a good place to start |

My 2 cents? To start, so you build confidence, use bait. I'd use a fish finding rig (any tackle shop can show you) a circle hook, a weight between 1/2 oz. and 2 oz. depending on current and mackerel or herring cut into 2 inch chunks. Nice, simple, effective. Later you can move onto plugs or flies or whatever.

Flyingstriper12, you might want to add some information in order to get some useful advice. The Hudson River is a big place. You could be talking about fishing somewhere near Manhattan or for all we know, up by Troy Dam somewhere. Also, do you and your dad fish by boat or from shore?
