My Reel!!
I have a Shimano TLD 25 and a Torium Is that strong enough for tuna fishing? and also is Stelwagon bank where everyone is fishing and cod
|
You're good for about 30 seconds to 1 minute if you hook up to one of the fish we have seen the past 2 years.

Like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

a butter knife..........
Geez 22, ok your new to this, no worries. Hook up with what is called a shared charter someday with Raider Ronnie above and at least see the gear needed to get an idea, have fun and more than likely catch some tuna.....and at reasonable rates. You will be in absolute awe of the power these fish have......and that is just the medium to large sizes. Now that being said, if your cod jigging with your tld25 and happen to hook a tuna about 45-50" and have plenty of braid on you stand a chance. This actually happens allot. My buddy and I did this twice in one day on similar tackle. |
Man I might have to upgrade to a Tiagra!!!!

So anyways!! on the real note.. Any suggestions on setup for rod and reel incase I decide to do tuna fishing my friends!!!
|
If you want some fun and not just meat fishing go with a 50W reel and a stand-up rod to match the reel. If you don't want to break the bank go with a Shimano TLD50W LRS, a bit less money than the Tiagra but good stuff.
This will cover you for medium, large and small, again small giants. Bigger than that you may still do if your good, but your getting under gunned fast. If going this route don't forget you need a belt and harness and friends to help. This set up will let you go play with some sharks too. Plenty of used stuff around, though get new line. |
This is an expensive game. First investment should be in getting some experience on a charter or with someone who has experience on the Bank. It can get nasty out there, fast. Between safety gear, fuel, and proper set ups, you are looking at big bucks. Go with others first to see if it is for you, and your wallet. Can't emphasize this enough, especially from a safety point of view....

Get a couple of 50's - better to buy the proper reels used, than buy the wrong ones new. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

I have the Shimano TLD 50II's and they have been great reels for the money, fish up to 67" with ease.
