Total Idiot
The wife won a trip to Los Cobos Mexico. I knew it was the diving Mecca of the world and the marlin/Tuna Mecca too. I didn't have time to even think about the surf before we had to be on a plane.
As we walked into our 4th floor room, I opened the balcony and looked out on the sea of Cortez and to my surprise, there was a gigantic bait ball being destroyed by what I'm told was black marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. It was about the size of a football field and lasted for about 20 minutes. It was then that I realized what an idiot that I am as my rod hangs in the basement at home. I stood there watching the surf and realized that is was going to cost me a fortune to get into the action. I jumped on line and quickly learned that it was worse than I thought, everything I own would be perfect here!! check this out . YouTube - BIGGEST ROOSTERFISH EVER CAUGHT FROM SHORE I am on this beach for 10 days....Anybody ever fished here - any recommendations on surf guides?? Does anybody have a recommendation for surfcasting charters here? |
I was there in 2001. I don't know where you're staying but we stayed at Villa Del Palmer on the west side of the Sea of Cortez. At the end of the beach where it goes into the marina there was some guys catching tuna right from the shore. We went into town and found the marina and booked a charter for a full day. He took us out for mahi-mahi and marlin. Had a great time! Caught many mahi with some awesome fighting. Landed several marlin but all small. Somewhere in a box I have cool pictures ( all film...way before I went digital). The guy we chartered also did surf fishing guiding, real cool guy and very knowledgable with the area.

WAY UP ON MY BUCKET LIST :btu:
Rooster from shore ;) |
I was there four years ago. I never saw a blitz liked you described. I remember seeing an outfitter in town. Might want to try there.

Never been there, but have read about it ... and thought that you could rent a fishing trip on one of the pangas for a lot less than going on one of the bigger sportfishing boats that go out for tuna and marlin ... the pangas stay closer to shore ... you may even be able to find a panga to rent and rent some outfits ... if not, go with the old hand line, although working a pencil on hand line is a little tough ... good luck and please keep us posted on our success ...

Here's the beach. I'm in Los Cobos at the Marquis. I will definitely be picking up a rig. I spent yesterday in the pool listening to tail slaps and watching bait scatter.

I feel your pain!
I couldn't live with myself if I passed up a chance like that. I brought fishing gear to Ireland once, and ended up making some kids day when he was able to bring home a fresh caught flounder. I was undergunned for the king macks that were patroling the docks in Donegal Bay, but it was great (at the time) to just be able to wet a line! Get out and chase them with a gaff if you have to!!!!! |
Absolutely spend whatever you need to get after it... You never know if you'll have a chance again!
Any chance of buying something in the US then getting it airmailed to you? Wouldn't be quite as fast, but if you're there for 9 more days... Would the shipping cost outweigh the extra you'd pay at a local shop? Can always sell the gear afterwards to recoup some loss... But the memories and photos will be priceless!! Good luck! |
Ask at the hotel if they have any fishing gear or where you might be able to rent some. Could save you more than a few $
|
I'm with the other guys, suck it up and buy a rig, you only live once. Please post pics and a report. I love this stuff.

So, yesterday I went to the desk to check out the options and was told that there is a Walmart and Sam's club about 20 minutes down the road, just outside of Cabo San lucas and they have a large selection of gear. Ok - at least a place to start.
20 minutes and $30 cab fare later, there I was in Walmart where they had one small section with 3 absolute garbage rods and no plugs etc. I found someone that spoke broken english and asked if there was a shop around with better stuff. Sure he said, ju see de cruse ship in the harbor? That's down town and just by the marina, there is a great shop. He said I could walk it in about 20 minutes. Ok, not too bad I could work off some of the junk I've been gorging myself on. So about an hour and half later, I made it to the shop. The guy there was totally cool and hooked my up, once he was done laughing at me for walking from Walmart. I jumped in a cab back to the hotel and into the pool bar to recover from the hike. Had a few margaritas and went up to the room to crash to get up early and hit the beach. About 4 am I awoke to what sounded like thunder? I jumped out on the balcony to check it out. Turns out it was 30-40' waves crashing on the beach and into the pool. Excellent - no fishing today so back to bed. Got up around 10 and the waves have subsided a bit but the locals told me not to even think about it as just off the beach is about 200' deep, one mistake and your done. Not sure if the attached video is too large to post. If so, I'll put it on youtube and post a link to it. This place is crazy - they tell me this comes up with no warning at all. You could be out on a rock and a 30 foot wave can appear out of nowhere and it's all over if you end up in the water. |

Broke down and booked a charter. We were basically sight fishing. Only got one hit while trolling. As we trolled, we were able to see fish and toss live bait to them. Here's a 100lb striped marlin.
What a place. Saw a huge school of tuna but couldn't feed them. |
