Sea Sheppard targets tuna fishery
Activists search for tuna boats off Libyan coast
ABOARD THE STEVE IRWIN — A shipload of conservation activists is cruising 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the Libyan coast looking for boats illegally fishing for bluefin tuna. Five NATO warships are visible on the horizon. Overnight, the Steve Irwin, owned by the U.S.-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, approached to within 21 miles (34 kilometers) of Libya. But because of the arms embargo it is enforcing, NATO told the Irwin to stay at least 30 miles (48 kilometers) offshore. A sister ship, the smaller, faster Brigitte Bardot, will scout ahead Monday for tuna boats. Experts say the stock of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean is in danger of collapse. The activists want to identify illegal fishing boats and send divers into the water to cut the nets and free the fish. Tuna bring high prices on the Japanese market. |
Real mixed on this, might be easier if it was simply pirates fighting pirates.
Large, well funded organization, Supporters of the Sea Hippies have no issue with breaking laws when it suits them. |

Now they are going to get one of themselves killed. The Japanese have a certain level of honor, not to mention the accountability that comes with being a first-world nation, to not blatantly try to hurt/injure the crew of the Sea Shephard. Those nitwits are heading into an area where the rules of the civilized world don't apply.

i hope they are good with automatic weapons

Someone is going to get hurt real bad. The guys fishing off the African coast are an entirely different breed than the guys whaling on vessels owned by the Japanese Government. They send divers into the water to cut nets, they better plan on never seeing them again.

This should get interesting :lurk:

Now this is a season that I'll actually watch.

If your fishing illegally you should be penalized. I don't think a local organization should group and take it upon itself to buy boats and shoot pepper spray at illegal comm fishing for stripers in the EEZ Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Adding because I'm in front of my computer and not trying to get this typed in on the iPhone.
We wouldn't see a group sponsored by large area clubs and business, hire several quasi-military style boats using quasi-military tactics harrassing the CT fishing fleet in the RI EEZso they can sell fish in Mass Commercial season. Report to officials? Drop a dime? Sure, that has been done as evidenced by the past few years. But Johnny Sea Hippie hasn't had Thurston O'Howell donate a couple hundred Gs so to buy an offshore fisher so he can play PETA Coast Guard. |
I have seen that show...a bunch of whackos looking for trouble. They remind me of a sea based WACO Texas organization.

First of ALL
there are no Hippies involved here! and i don't think you can
lump conservationists and Hippies into the same sentence. all that is ...is spouting hatred for people born in the early 50's i'd like to see even ONE study showing that the age group of people that are 60 - 70 years old now, or that were once known as Hippies are this BIG threat to "Surf Fishermen" or that the "birders" have them as their main constituents within their ranks. I watched a film yesterday about these islanders that had cut down every last tree so that NONE were left to build a canoe out of anymore so a generation had no escape and were hunted down like wild pigs. That sure makes ya think about planting a tree or two. Now back to the subject.... i'd love to see the sea shepard crews cut nets on the boats steeling our bait resources BLIND ->dumping trash fish so the Bass will have sustainable food sources for the future. Taking these bait fish and grinding them up to make fish oil and cat food and cattle feed suppliment is extremely short sighted. |
