I should have stopped and raided the patch yesterday when I picked up the dogs. :)

Mmmm... been at the inlaws in Truro all weekend. They have wild blueberries everywhere around their property. Been having blueberry waffles or blueberry pancakes for breakfast every day.

I'll take the BIG berry anytime over the small berry, much prefer the southern NJ Hammonton berries over the Maine variety. I'm biased in that I grew up in that area. When camping in Maine nothing beats a fresh picked wild Maine berry in the pancakes!

If I tried to pick my own in Hammonton I'd be arrested. But they are friggin HUGE!

I grow 6 varieties, but do have one wild small berry type. I never met a blue berry I didn't like. The key is spring pruning. Let less mature but get bigger size.

like these. :)

Cherry berry time

Great time of year for fruit lovers. Lots of the berries, cherries, peaches , etc on sale. I love cherries , always have.

I grew up in Central Falls RI and I remember these impossible climbs up the sides of 2 story houses then runs along the roofs to get a good broad jump to a particular medium hight garage roof one story lower from which we could access all you could eat bing type cherries. That tree is long gone but I look back at the life and limb risks we took as just like 10 year olds to get the cherries.

Now its about $2.49 a pound for Cherries, blueberries , strawberries. less for peaches and plums. Now they are not local yet but still mostly grown in the USA right now. Raspberries and blackberries are always out of site expensive now. Too bad , I love Raspberries too!

I find the local fruits have gone way up in price. Farmers markets have gotten to be more expensive than Whole Foods when local fruit is in season. Too bad. I used to make it a point to hit the farmers markets , now maybe every now and then but not a habit anymore.

Anyway , I can see a little over indulgence on some fruit the next few weeks. I don't think anybody ever got fat eating fruit alone. Its the shortcake and whipped cream and the butter strueselle pastry with the raspberries that will get you! :)

When we moved to Cumberland in 65 there were wild blueberries everywhere in the woods aound us. Unfortunately, no more.

Made right , a nice blueberry pie (like they make at wrights dairy farm) is the best of all pies IMO.

Sorry, Im still half out of it with this respiratory plague I picked up. I merged them into 1 thread.

Saltheart 07-12-2011 07:02 PM

In fact in remembering the roof hopping we did to get at that cherry tree in CF, I remembered that like 10 years after my daredevil days , some kid fell off the roof or missed the big roof to roof broad jump and was seriously hurt. The tree owner, a bar on Cowden St (bar is still there) , cut the tree down after that.
