I had an awesome time fishing this morning
 

Got to the Herring Run ( at 3:45 a.m.), and the friekin lot was empty, void of all other human beings. Not a warm blooded mammal in sight. I took my time get my canal scooter set up, because I didn't have to beat anyone to my friekin spot. Tide was running east fast. But since I was late, and false dawn was upon the canal, I didn't care. I made a ton of casts without so much as a bump, nary a one, nada, zipootski................But it was a beautiful day. The first time this year that no one camped out next to me, 20', 30', 40' away. It was also nice that those same people didn't get so excited when they weren't hooking up on the usual little boofish swimming by they climbed up the embankment and walked behind me casting over my head (this is the only time anyone elicited a remark from me that could be construed agressive, relatively nasty actually, in nature), which pissed me off thoroughly. Anyway I went to Scussett later and ran into Wayne Hess and another guy I didn't know who talked my ear off for an hour. Not a fish was caught but a great morning it was. One guy did say they were here and hour before, but were small. ha ha

It's true, they WERE THERE an hour before. They always are.

Either an hour before or an hour after, or yesterday or tomorrow, then there will be the time when YOU are the one saying "You should have been here XXXXX!!!"

It's just karma, man. The Ying and the Yang.
I hate when I come out skunked, but also love just getting out and enjoying the time to myself!

Just be careful if Mike sets up next to you. He's still getting the hang of casting eels and tends to not be as accurate as he is with plugs.:devil2:

Wait, you got him to use eels? Last time I fished with him and had eels, he scoffed when I offered him some.

I can use eels as well. Haven't in years, but when Mikey isn't looking I'll pull out the long dip net and reach over his way.

Seamule is an expert eeler. He's also is great at stopping fishing to chase deer through the woods.:rotf2: I'm really a plug guy at heart, but this time of year I use eels because I mostly fish at night and hate getting skunked. You saw me throwing plugs the other night, too. It was just that the eels were what was working.

We fish similar styles. I'd rather plug but during mid-summer eels are the ticket. The little bit of extra aggravation buying eels and tending them is worth it when you're paying $30 in gas round trip, if it means landing a few more fish.

I need to move closer to the canal.

at 5 am I was in Boston unloading a tractor trailer full of 150 lb doors ,.. always a pleasure running into you down there Frank ..

Talk your ear off types are seem to be so common among fisherman. Can drive you nuts occasionally but definitely bring some entertainment value to the the sport.....lots of characters!

I love plugging and eeling, but I really struggle with drifting eels in the canal for some reason. something always goes wrong, I fumble with the line when trying to get it on the roller, I miss a lot of hits when i let the eel swing, etc. I'm going to keep at it as I've seen the results first hand :eek: but generally speaking I suck at drifting eels. give me a rocky perch to cast and retrieve eels and plugs from and I'm right at home....

we'll have to go when the fishing heats up again around the end of Aug. it will be nice having someone to share the cost of gas with. And eels are the ticket right through November, but I've also had some great Sept nights jigging big shads like most do in the spring. Oh, and I have to get you down to Gansett and SoCo for a traditional Rhody fall blitz(if we have one this year :rollem:)

One thing about fisherman, we have this common bond. Its almost as if you've known someone for twenty years, but only just met. Wish it was this easy meeting women years ago.

I second to that.

Sounds great to me. I hear you on the price of gas - $30 round trip on your own gets expensive when you add in eels, food and lost gear/jigs.

Looking forward to the fall.
