This is in my front yard. BIGGER than my hand. Easy 6" across with this little spindly stalk.

Way cool mushroom. Never seen one of these.

Very cool. Been seeing a ton of mushrooms that last few days with all the rain.

That almost looks like an Amanita. Not sure we get the white one that's super poisonous up in these parts - angel of death, white angel... something like that.

I've seen a couple of the red ones with the white spots while hiking. Looks like it's right out of Alice in Wonderland.

I'll give you 20 bucks a gram.

Saltystool I like it. The thing is big enough for a chipmunk to sit on it. The stalk is like 1/2" thick. The color came out a bit off in the picture, it's more of a purple-brown than brown.

Seriously doubt it's edible. Johnny those red ones are seriously poisonous. One mouthful is more than enough to kill a grown man. Those are one of the most poisonous things in the world. If you boil them with vinegar you can eat them, they're supposed to taste good. So i've read. I wouldnt.

There is probably a smurf or 2 living in that thing! What are the one called that make a plume of smoke when you step on them? They are brown, round and have a paper bag kind of shell? We would flick them with our fingers or toss rocks on them when we were kids. Pretty cool but haven't seen them in over 20 years, probably because I haven't paid attention. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Believe it or not, if treated appropriately, they have hallucinogenic properties. Don't ask me how I know. :hidin:

I believe that death angel is the most poisonous - responsible for something like half the deaths in the world.

on the stem of that shroom is a little white skin ring

edible shrooms don't have those and it's a thing you look for.

Death cap, is the most common name for it.

That's right. I thought there was some nickname that had "angel" in it, but I'm probably thinking of something else.

That's an old wives tale.

Id bet by the look of it it's a wine cap or Stropharia rugoso-annulata . Rugoso refers to the red burgundy color when they are smaller . Annulata refers to the ring under the cap . I can't be sure just from the picture and because it's old though . These can get huge!ANother name is garden giant . The one pictured is average sized ! They are good eating when smaller , not my favorite though . They are very common in wood chip beds, compost and disturbed soil .

Never eat any mushrooms unless you have an expert confirm the identification .

Im looking forward to some maitakes soon!!!! I have a spot for chicken of the woods too . These tear me up though .....

buddy says Agaricus species most likely, pic of underside would confirm.

Still say wine cap . If you kick it , the base is prob round and has thick white strand like roots going into the soil. I just grew these on the side of the porch the last few years . Great as a garden companion too . Ill dig up some pix .

really easy to culture on soaked or boiled cardboard , then spread around the yard and compost piles .

it's all shriveled up now but none of those pics look like it? That had a flat top with no curves? Dark colored bottom with what looked like silky gills underneath. Stalk was teeny teeny compared to those too?
