Hurricane Preparedness (a/k/a the annoy RockFishJoe & Clammer Thread)

With the potential of a Category 2 storm hitting us late weekend - what steps are needed?

Do we board up windows for example?

Rockfish9 08-24-2011 01:16 PM

I'll pull the boat and secure it to the trailer on dry land.... fuel up and test start the generator and chainsaw.. I've got gas for the grill, a freezer full of fish and meat and plenty of booze.. after that.. it's out of my hands... all the boards in the world wouldn't stop the 30'+ pine trees in the front yard...I'll spend my vacation next week doing what ever it takes to get back to normal.

Saltheart 08-24-2011 01:23 PM

Pray it is goes East or west even just 50 miles.
If it does come up the bay John , get the wife and kid out of your house. If it hits the bay at high tide, you will get flooded.

RIJIMMY 08-24-2011 01:23 PM

i'll be out of town and wont be able to pull the boat from the slip - any suggestions on what can be done to prepare her? I figured doubling the lines is about it.

vineyardblues 08-24-2011 01:26 PM

Wish my wife and family well wishes as they are on Vacation ocean frt @ the cape :)

As they were for Bob ,,,, :) were as they had to move out of that house last time ..... lol

FishermanTim 08-24-2011 01:27 PM

Make sure you have plenty of aspirin and booze so you can deal with the idiots that will eventually give you a headache!

As for me, I have all the basics covered.
Water, food, light, first aid, fuel, insurance paid, and something to do that DOESN't require a TV or a Computer!

How soon before we see the "traditional" run-out-of-everything news clips from local food store?
Apparently HD has already seen a run on generators, and I'm sure Loews has too!

OH, and how long on Sunday will it take before we see the first moron go for a swim or surf during the storm?

OK, back to work again.......

Saltheart 08-24-2011 01:34 PM

The stupidest I have seen is people leaning out over the ocean from the cliffs in Newport relying on the heavy wind to keep them from falling off into the grinding waves below.

Love the new title Boss man.. made my day...

fishbones 08-24-2011 02:15 PM

I guess I'll charge up the portable dvd player and my kid's video games so he has something to do if we lose power. I'll put the pool stuff and patio furniture away and make sure the gutters are clear of debris. Other than that, I have plenty of ice and coolers and enough food and liquor to get through anything mother nature can throw my way.

Yep. I'll be powering down client's servers and unnecessary equipment, powering down most of my mine and run the Innernets off my UPS(s) and laptops on low power settings.

Mike P 08-24-2011 02:44 PM

Tie down grills and anything else that you can't move inside, and move everything inside that you can. That's about all you can do. Cat 2 force winds shouldn't break windows, but flying debris can, I guess. I won't bother. I don't know whether the old advice about opening windows a crack to "equalize pressure" is a wives' tale or not. I don't do it.

If you live close enough to the water to even wonder about being washed away, it might be a good idea to make plans to evacuate.

Oh, and stuff in the freezer? Won't do much good if your power is out more than a coupla days. Dry good, canned goods, that's what's good to have on hand. Stuff you can eat cold if you have an electric range, and no gas or charcoal grill.

The Dad Fisherman 08-24-2011 02:47 PM

What.......Nobody running out to get Bread, Milk, Batteries, and Bottled Water.

Steve K 08-24-2011 02:58 PM

The Weather Channel is being their alarmist selves again. Just heard them say this could be the worst storm the Boston area has ever seen in some people's lifetimes.

I have plenty of batteries, we can bake our own bread as the thing is approaching, and milk would spoil anyway if the power's out. My water comes from ground water wells. What I probably need more than anything else is gas for the chainsaw. :rotf2:

And don't forget to top off your car's 3/4 full gas tank, so it can sit in the yard all week underneath a downed tree.

The Dad Fisherman 08-24-2011 03:12 PM

Oh...and Spam...gotta stock up on Spam

Sgt Striper 08-24-2011 03:14 PM

Fill the fridge and freezer w/ frozen bottles of water, use a cooler for drinks so you are not opening and closing the fridge! I go the old fashion way for lights, hurricane lamps. Gotta get a gallon or so of lamp oil. Gas grill or camping stove is a good idea if you have electric range. I'll load the iPad,iPod,iPhone (recharge w/ car charger) up w/ movies and pull out some books. Don't forget markers and crayons for da kids!!

wader-dad 08-24-2011 03:18 PM

Well its official now- Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel is coming to report from somewhere on the Cape.

So maybe one of us should stand next to him casting a bottle plug into the Maelstrom. That would be a good video.

Steve K 08-24-2011 03:34 PM

I think Jim Cantore is a robot. He must never sleep.

slow eddie 08-24-2011 03:48 PM

my checklist consists of:
1 store anything that can fly.
2 clean the coolers for the champagne.
3 stock up on junk food.
4 order a 6 pk. of viagra.
that should do it.

OLD GOAT 08-24-2011 03:51 PM

Well I might not be the sharpest pencil in the box but the boat is pulled and i have taters, salt pork and hogs so we should be in good shape. I hope.
O ya we have company coming Sunday for a couple of days. Should be fun.

tattoobob 08-24-2011 03:56 PM

I have a 3 day trip planned to Truro starting Friday with the camper, I guess I should cancel it and try to get my money back

nightfighter 08-24-2011 04:14 PM

By tomorrow the trailer wil have two new leaf springs, four new hubs, new hitch, new jack, new safety chain, and new cable on winch... Big heavy pile of old junk next to it right now. All four brakes were gone. Not putting any back on it. Undecided as to whether I will haul or not. If I do, it will be Saturday night...in the dark, when the morons have left the ramp.

As for the house, I already lost the big trees last weekend, but still have a box elder that I would like down. Better half gets back tonight, so she can handle the provisioning. I am already fielding calls from clients wanting help or work ahead of the storm.... Two calls to haul their boats out for them in the past half hour.

New England PHRF Sailing Championship is scheduled to be held here in Marblehead this weekend.... Organizers to make a decision tomorrow by 10 AM. Can't see them wanting another 70 racing boats in the harbor....

johnny ducketts 08-24-2011 04:30 PM

If cantore's coming...were all set...things tend to miss him. Although, living in east Falmouth, I gotta bad feeling, I hope it's only gas though. I'm a little nervous.

Living far from the coast i am doing nothing to prepare. Going to load up the plug bag and head to the water. Well the only thing i will do is top off the chainsaw with gas and oil. Blade is already sharp from the tornado.

derekl 08-24-2011 05:50 PM

just got all 12 chains ready to drop off for sharpening, filled the 3 5 gallon tanks and a gallon of bar oil all set

doc 08-24-2011 06:13 PM
