Need to adjust shift cable Johnson 2005

I have a 2005 90 HP Johnson outboard that needs adjustment on shift cable. It shifts fine in driveway on garden hose but when on the water I need to go a little past the shift lever detent to come out of forward gear. I believe the small bracket (holding shift cable at engine) gets removed or loosened an then the cable thumbwell is adjustmented but would like someone with experience to look at it. Anyone know how to do this? Would trade fishing a trip for the right help.

Doug,
Thanks again for your help. I will give it a try as soon as figure out which cable is the shift vs. the throttle.
