A Nantucket group has started a serious organization to legally amend the Marine Mammal Protection Act to cull the seals in Southern New England. (Which as you know, the seal situation has gotten way out of hand now, impacting fishing and human enjoyment of the shores.)

In order to reach out to off-islanders a online petition has been established. If you can, please show your support by signing it.
More support is needed.

ok stupid question...what exactly does "humane dispersion" mean? If it really means they would be "dispersed" does that really solve anything?

Probably means they're going to pick them up and move to a new beach. Then they can swim back again.

I think "humane dispersion" refers to non-lethal means of controlling seal populations. One approach is to upset their haul-out and breeding areas. Seals like peace a quiet when pupping so if you constantly annoy them with loud sounds they won't set up shop there. However, I'm of the opinion that more proactive methods are needed, must like those used for deer populations.

Seriously, this has a snowballs chance in hell, of doing anything to change the MMPA regarding seals.. Best Wishes, but don't bet the farm on it.

I have had some "one on one" time with seals, and not by choice...they are truly not docile when disturbed.. numbers (of them) can lead to some truly aggressive behaviour, on their part.

Is there any truth to the comment I once heard that the seals are all over now because Mononomy's structure has changed and the seals had to haul out someplace new, or is that bs?

Seriously and not to sound rude but if it truly means "dispersing" than I am out. "Dispersing" will only send them somewhere else and not solve anything. Nor is there anything saying they will "disperse" at all or very far.

I look at any type of action that addresses the issue a step in the right direction, the more people who get behind any type of action against the over population will show their are many who don't find them cute. If you don't mind having them around don't sign it.

The people who fight to protect them for the most part only visit the shorelines and have no idea of the actual damage being done by these cute big eyed mammals. It's a war of numbers and the fishermen are out numbered in this battle.

I agree this effort will go nowhere; but signing this petition makes me feel like I did at least...something. Three late falls ago, Flap Tail and I made the conscious decision NOT to run over a seal resting in a tire track in the middle of the night out at P'town.

They are in certain spots for a reason. Just like us. They, unlike us Actualy live in the water. Leave em alone unless they can vote with you.

So do bacteria but we wipe them out all the time. No difference to me.

Then your an asz. And your an asz that lives on land . You should have no say about the seals that live there. Imagine a seal busting your bag for living near a couple if trees? Get off the wagon!

When other living organisms have a negative effect on humans we control them don't we?

Is that what you think? You have more of a right to the ocean than something that was born in it and lives there everyday? Btw I don't kill bugs unless they bit me.

Rights for seals?
 

Who decides what rights anyone or anything has? We humans do
Why does anyone have the right to decide what I can or can't do to my body? Because they feel they know whats best for me? It should not be their concern. It's my body, and if it doesn't effect anyone else I should be able to do what I want to or with it shouldn't I ?

If a seal bites me do I have the right to kill it? NO

The number of seals is getting out of control in many areas and having a negative effect on the other living creatures in that area and needs to be addressed. I'm not calling for a mass slaughter, a thinning of the heard is whats called for.

We should all have a say in what happens in our communities without being silenced by others who feel they know whats best. Everything in moderation including controls placed other people who may disagree with your perspective.

Perhaps we can discuss plovers next?

that the BACTERIA level in the water is a HUGE problem,
dispersing them will not change that except to spread it out.

look how fast beaches get closed when human Bacteria
is found in the water...

I don't see the same thing apply when it comes to seal bacteria..
not that it's the only arguement for reducing the herd
which will certainly double in time (once again)

same as deer. - yes.

We've thinned Deer, Coyotes, Bear and other animals to sustain a balance with them.....Seals should be no different.

I don't think they need to be wiped out but they definitely need to be managed and with the marine Mammal Protection laws as written on the books there is no way to effectively manage them.
