Another Weird Sighting
 

I fished today starting just a daybreak.
Got some pogies then some macks for live lining. :fishin::fishin:
Did very well with 6 bass from 30 inches to 30+ pounds. I was back at the dock by 1 and the folks at the marina wanted me to throw it on the grill. But this one is for my dinner sorry !!!!!

So anyway.......while into this good bass fishing, I see this dark area in the water.
I thought it was a floating weed patch, but it was moving and getting closer. Then I saw a fin and thought it was a small shark. But it was flopping back and forth.

Yes it was a mola-mola. :confused::confused:
A small one about 3-4 feet long.

What a STRANGE looking fish..

I hardly ever see them and never in this close.
I was in like 10-14 feet of water right off a beach.:confused::confused:

Bet that one will come through the canal on the way back

They get really big (like 1000#)...I see several each season out here. They like to eat jellyfish. A friend hit one at 30knots offshore on the way to the canyon...broke a blade off a SS prop! I was a slow ride back.

I watched this thing drive on to the beach on it's own power then back into the water and retract the wheels. I want one

Believe it or not, on 2 different occasions I saw a mola mola jump out of the water, and no I wasn't drinking.

Usually see a few a year offshore and they van be huge. And yes they can jump also

Had one at the transom of my boat last weekend offshore in the middle of the night.

had one check out the the boat out sharkin last year. we could have touched it. he left when the sharks showed up. :)

We saw the same one....out by Harding's. Very cool.

Very cool fish. Also called an ocean sunfish. We see them often fishing near Cranes Beach.

van where did you see it , i saw a small one in presidents road today . i was heading in and i thought it was a shark fin at first but upon closer look the fin was moving back and forth . i tried to get a up close look but it sounded just as i made it foward .i wonder if the fish is ill because i thought they eat only jellyfish and that season has past ? :huh:

Saw it near Hull first time.

Saw it again last Wednesday near 3-1/2. A buddy called me from his boat to say he sees something wierd and a fin. I told him what it was and we were nearby. Sure enough it was the mola it went right under his boat.

Blue Oyster : Ditto - I also saw this in President Roads, just SW of Deer Island. We thought it was an injured shark - all we saw at first was a fin, a whitish belly and a large fish swimming sideways. Then we circled around and got a better look.

I had seen my first one years ago while out on a fishing charter.
It passed under the boat from the opposite side from me and emerged from under the boat right under where I was standing.

Saying this thing was huge would be an understatement. It was more that 1/3 the boat length in size (from fin to fin). When I saw the head, I realized what it was, and then when I realized how big it was I wish I had a camera!

They are a very unusual fish!
