green tomatoes?
Should I give up hope on the green ones I have? Any tricks? I was thinking of covering the whole plant with one of those paper leaf bags at night. Otherwise they are getting picked and pickled.
Raven maybe some insight? |
Though I haven't tried it yet, I was told to take them and put them in a brown paper bag with an apple or two. Apparently, the apple gives off some gas and ripens them. Check every day.
I have a ton that just won't turn so I think I'm going to try it out and see if it works |

green tomatoes are quite easy to ripen
the cut apple inside a brown paper bag trick (which allows them to breathe) gives off ethlyne gas, the same gas commercial growers use to ripen all commercial tomato's SO...no need to pickle them.... you can even freeze some but those you typically only use in stews or pasta dishes . as for covering them.... thats usually a lost cause unless you use walls of water.... but those are not huge, and usually are used for smaller plants |
be glad you have some green ones.. this was the worst crop for me in 20 years.. the vines just never grew..we normaly put up 10-15 gallons of sauce each season... we were hard pressed to get enough for a can of stewed tomatoes.. we have bumper crop of eggplants... last year they were the weak crop.. go figure.

i thought i'd get a bumper crop this year
last year i grew tomatoes in 5 gallon pots and i was givin them away by the box this year i didn't use the five gallon pots and the plants started out great but the drought/heat combination ...they didn't like the weather :huh: sumthin so next year, i will DOUBLE my pots production on EVERYTHING |

was doing ok with them, then the hurricane wind, and salt killed pretty much everything in the garden.

i they are light green(just before turning red) they will ripen on the wind sllll If the are to young and really green, pickle them. I love pickled green tomtoes. nice on sandwiches in salads or just right out of the pickle jar to your mouth :)
