I have a brand new pellet insert.

that fire proof glass is outrageously expensive

I have a QuadraFire. Biggest one they make, 75,000 BTUs per hour. I heat almost 3000 sq ft and keep the house around 70. 5/16 steel, firebrick lined with manifolds that re-burn the gases and 2 thermostatic blowers.

I have the natural gas insert. externally vented.

I love that.

PELLET insert. CLEANER, cheaper and MUCHO easier to work with.

St Croix York. I heat 90% of my house with it and if it gets too cold I fill it with giant needles and it warms up good :hee:

yeah, except the auto feeder jams all the time. If the electricity goes out your screwed and pellets are $250+ a ton. I have 15 acres of oak. My fuel is free except for my labor.

3 jams in 3 years. The quality of what you put in it makes a big difference. You don't put crap gas in your car or it don't run. Don't put crap pellets into your stove and it don't jam. I have a ups that runs it for up to 1 hour...also generator backup....pellets are $250 a ton yes but there's no creosote to deal with, they're completely renewable energy and burn the cleanest of all fuels out there when properly setup. No chainsaw involved, no splitting, just load a 40lb bag twice a day in the hopper. Done. Less mess, less sawdust, less soot... stove gets shut down every 3 days for vacuuming out the ash. Down for 1/2 hour tops, clean the glass and restart. Other than that it runs non stop November-March/April 24 hours a day.

And as you can tell Scott is happy as a Lark

I'm just stating the facts. I've owned both and seen both sides. It's a great way to heat your house and very economical.

I'm so happy I'm letting a dealer bend me over repairing my truck with a dealer only computer and a dealer only sensor that sells for $700! Shoot right now he's probably got me about 1500 in the hole. lEtS bE hApPy

I'm looking too, does the pellet insert heat as well as a wood insert?
Is istalling them basically the same task?

wood insert takes a 6" stainless liner. Pellet takes a 4"

Other than that they are the same basic install. Pellet insert needs 110v to run the screw and the blowers, but then again most inserts have electric blowers too so don't think it's really an issue anymore. I use a standard APC ups on mine. Biggest current draw is when you light it, there is a humungus glow plug that lights til the heat sensor is activated. I don't think the ups would run that long from a cold start but it runs great when it's running and the power goes out-the ignitor isn't working at that point anyway.

Is the heat the same...I think for a insert you get better heat out of a pellet unit, you can vary the auger so the flame is low or full on conflagration call the fire dept :)

I looked at lopi's site as they make both and the wood insert is 73k btu while the pellet is 45k btu output.
