RYE, N.H. -- Marine biologists are baffled by the deaths of at least nine seals found on New Hampshire beaches.
Six seals were found Thursday at Jenness State Beach, two at Wallis Sands State Beach and another in Hampton.
A surfer at Jenness Beach says he saw more dead seals floating in the water.
A spokesman for the New England Aquarium in Boston says aquarium experts have retrieved some of the carcasses to try and determine why they died. Some were badly decomposed.
The spokesman tells the Portsmouth Herald it is too early to know whether there is a common thread in the deaths.
He says sometimes unusually high tides wash up the bodies. Other potential causes are a lack of food in the area, exposure to parasites or human impact.
