Hull question

Does anyone know what is happening when you can feel play in the hull of a boat?
I looked at a boat today and at the aft of the boat by the transome there was a gap, i'm guessing its a seperation between the gel coat (or whatever lesser material used) and the hull itself, but I'm not to sure.
The boat is a 91 17ft wellcraft cc.
Thanks in advance.

a. too many quick starts out of the hole
b..too big of a motor [weight] on transom
C.. transom ply is shot, leaveing only the glass to do all the work
d...deck ply is shot leaveing the glass to hold up the deck.
e...all the above.
