WPRI is saying Sachuest:
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - Crews have pulled a fisherman from the water off Sachuest Point. According to the Middletown Fire Chief, the fisherman was casting from the rocks early Wednesday on Third Beach when he fell in the water. According to firefighters, a friend who was fishing with the man called for help. The fisherman was pulled taken to Newport Hospital to be treated. His condition isn't known at this time. Right now police have blocked access to the area at Sachuest Point. |
usually the backside of sachuest is pretty calm compared to the south facing point. 3rd beach is totally protected from ocean swells... This is very strange and just proves that you have to be careful ANYWHERE you fish.....
|
I hope he will be ok. God be with him at this time. Yes, anything can happen at any time. Let's all be careful out there!
|
Unfortunately, the Pojo is reporting that the man died. Very sad. Please be safe out there everyone!

Terrible news...
Portsmouth man dies after he's swept into the water while fishing in Middletown Comments 0 | Recommend 0 November 2, 2011 10:20 am By Maria Armental MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- A Portsmouth man who was fishing at Third Beach early this morning died, the police said. Gary Mathias, 48, was fishing on the rocks at Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge around 4 a.m. when he was swept away by a wave. Sgt. Mark Minnella entered the water with a life line attached, but the surf was too rough. A Middletown Fire Department boat pulled Mathias out of the water at the Third Beach boat ramp, where Newport rescue personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Mathias was taken to Newport Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The incident remains under investigation. |
:( RIP... God bless him, his family and friends.

Very sad news. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
I was with a couple of friends discussing safety while fishing last night and we were talking about how every year we hear a story like this. Another reminder about how dangerous surfcasting can be. |
sad news, the name sounds familiar?

Same here - name does seem familiar but not sure if it is a name from around these parts or back in time.

Another sad day in a season of bad news. Gary was a regular customer of the Salt Water Edge shop where I work part time. He worked as Chef at the Brick Alley Pub in Newport and was an avid chaser of striped bass via surf and kayak. Always very friendly and turned many of his kitchen staff into avid surf casters as well. I'm at a loss for words...

T&P, used to see him at the Brick Alley once in a while. Stuff like this hits home when its a place where you spend alot of time fishing.
|
Tough loss - hate to see things like that happen. Condolences to family and friends. Be careful out there.
